For two days in a row, Antero Reservoir in Park County has had the lowest temperature recorded in the United States at brrr 48 degrees below zero.
That's not all. On Monday, Crested Butte recorded a temperature of -31 degrees Fahrenheit. Alamosa, Gunnison and Kremmling all recorded lows of -26 degrees.
Jim Kalina, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said Antero Reservoir which is about 75 miles west of Colorado Springs typically gets that cold every year at least a couple times. It sits at nearly 9,000 feet of elevation, after all. The coldest temperature recorded there ever was was -54 degrees.
...
Tonight will be cold too.

Happy New Year
-25 at the summer place this morning, but we’re at the winter place where it got down to +17 and up to 43. Both in Colorado, 3 hours apart.
And to you. I stay in on booze holidays like this and St. Patrick’s day.
If you are properly dressed, being out in extreme cold temperatures (-20 or lower) can be quite invigorating.
The super dense air is full of micro ice crystals that shimmer in the sun. And sounds are amplified. Sounding clearer and traveling further.
And breathing super cold, super dense air makes you feel great.
Happy New Year back atcha.
Thanks for what you do here.
That’s cold. The coldest I ever remember it in the Minneapolis-St Paul area was in the late 1990s. It was my son’s last year in the Boy Scouts and we were on a winter expedition along the St. Croix River just east of St. Paul.
The temp one night made it to 40 below.
I got up about every 2 hours that night to warm up my car so it would get us home the next day. The car came through.
We still talk about that trip.
I can remember the branches tinkling into each other sounding like little crystal bells when the breeze buffeted them. Thankfully where I live now is much warmer.
Thanks for all you do here.
Happy New Year to you and All.
Buckle up and stay safe.
I grew up in Northern Minnesota in the 60s. Minus 40 occurred several times most winters. I even filled a gallon jug with green chlorine gas which liquifies at -39F, and put it on the back porch to see if could see any liquid. I couldn’t. One morning while I walked to college, the radio reported a temperature below -50F. Another (windy) morning I froze my North side (left) ear while running across an open athletic field to get to swimming training.
From the Tonight Show with Johnny Carson.
Johnny: Man, is it cold out there today.
Ed: How cold is it?
Johnny: Well, on my way in this afternoon, I couldn’t help but notice an exhibitionist on the corner, and it’s so cold, he was flashing a drawing of himself.
Happy New Year .
The terrain makes a huge difference.
Just imagine how cold it would be without the planet being on fire due to man made global warming.
“The planet has a fee-ver,” Al Gore.
Yes it does.
While not too bad at the moment in Quebec & Ontario in Canada - they started getting colder than average temperatures back in November. This was the second year in a row. The temperatures are certainly getting colder.
