‘Cats’ Headed for $100 Million Box Office Loss
Variety ^ | December 29, 2019 | Rebecca Rubin

Universal’s “Cats” was in need of a holiday miracle. Instead, the filmmaking team behind the box office disaster got a lump of coal. Tom Hooper’s big-screen adaptation has clawed its way to $38 million globally after two weeks in theaters, a dismal figure that could result in $100 million in theatrical losses, according to rival studio executives. After its disappointing $6.5 million domestic debut ahead of Christmas, “Cats” failed to gain any traction during the busiest time of year for moviegoing. In its sophomore outing, the film was relegated to No. 9 on box office charts, scraping together $8.7 million over the five-day holiday frame. Audiences, dissuaded by brutal reviews, instead made the Jellicle choice to see Disney’s “Frozen 2,” “Spies in Disguise,” or essentially anything that didn’t involve Judi Dench, Jennifer Hudson, Taylor Swift and Idris Elba pretending to be felines.

The only Broadway show I can say I really liked was Jersey Boys.
Loved the movie too.

We took a family trip to NY many years ago. Everybody else went to see 'Cats'. I went to Bleecker Street and saw George Coleman.

Did they incorporate any of the mob involvement in the Broadway show?

I love the whole Taylor Swift drama. For a long time she refused to speak out politically in order not to alienate fans. THEN she decided she needed to open her trap. Get woke, go broke tay tay.

Wasn’t Taylor supposedly developing a biopic of Joni Mitchell starring herself and in which she planned to sing and play Joni’s songs (which she does not have the chops for in my opinion)? Good luck getting that financed now.

Tom the Son saw it. He said it was “okay part of the time.”

Probably when the closing credits rolled.

Never saw it. However, it ran for 18 yrs on Broadway & 21 yrs in London, so apparently LOTS of people went to see it.

I fear “Richard Jewell” is heading for a similar fate.

No one is going to see it. It’s a great movie.

That will happen as long as she continues to be a good little leftist trashing The President , Conservatives and being a grateful socialist in order to repay Sorus for financing her music library buyout.

Heh, you were hoping for security though obscurity in this thread!

Seriously, though...the only thing that would have been better here is if the play had Robert DiNiro, Lindsey Vonn, and Megan Rapinoe in it!

Water World Ishtar and Heavens Gate come to mind and bring a smile to my face. These disgusting pigs deserve to flop regularly; so nice to see this one.

Anything with Taylor Swift in it does not get my dollar or time.
**********************************
Certainly not anything with Taylor Swift 2.0. Taylor Swift 1.0 was a different and far better story entirely.

I haven’t been to a movie theater in over a year.

The kids wanted to see the recent Star Wars movie.
It was awful.
It was awful at $30/person for the tickets and snacks.
And this was supposed to be the best that was offered up for the Christmas season. And it was awful.

A Cats movie isn’t even on the radar. The Richard Jewell movie...maybe. The 1917 movie...maybe. But Cats? The costumes alone creep me out.
