However, it ran for 18 yrs on Broadway & 21 yrs in London, so apparently LOTS of people went to see it.They milked it for all it was worth onstage and then waited too long to make the movie. Cats was a phenomenon when it first opened. By the time a movie was made, no one was interested.

We saw Cats in about 1988...we were given the story to read beforehand, as people told us it wouldn’t make sense otherwise. Well..really don’t recall it being that great...but seeing Jackie Mason live WAS.
