Construction began Friday on a Navy ship named after Harvey Milk, a former San Francisco supervisor and activist who was fatally shot months after becoming the first openly gay man elected in California more than forty years ago.
Almost 30 years before his election, Milk was a Naval dive officer based in San Diego. His nephew, Stuart Milk, attended Friday’s event and said naming the ship — known as a fleet oiler — after his uncle sends a message to people around the world.

They guy didn’t deserve murder. And it would have been very appropriate for Sen. Diane Feinstein to have been there- to honor the guy whose office she took advantaged by his murder. Having been in the Navy decades ago, I can only imagine the type of jokes being made by officers and enlisted alike.

Milk was a Navy Diver. Did they have to name it after him and his hoses?
The fleet oiler is essential to the Navy’s ability to project power and keep the sea lanes of communication open.
It’s a shame they disgraced this ship class with such a name.
