Brother of UPS driver taken hostage and killed during shootout with cops reveals he was covering another employee's route - as FBI identifies diamond thieves who also died in the standoff

The UPS driver who was killed in a hostage situation and shootout was covering another driver's route when he died, his brother has said.

Driver Frank Ordonez, a 27-year-old father of two young girls, died in the mayhem along with innocent motorist Richard Cutshaw, a 70-year-old union representative who was two years away from retirement, and the two armed robbers who opened fire on cops.

Lamar Alexander, 41, and Ronnie Jerome Hill, 41, both of Miami-Dade County, were identified by the FBI as the perpetrators of Thursday's armed jewelry store robbery, carjacking, kidnapping and shootout with cops that left both criminals and two others dead.

Records show that both men have extensive felony criminal records, and that Alexander had just been released from prison on an armed robbery conviction.

Ordonez was on his first day of work as a UPS driver when the fatal carnage unfolded, and his brother told CNN that he was covering the route of a driver who had called out sick that day, a common first assignment for rookie UPS drivers.

I don’t think police procedure requires them to be IN FRONT of the civilian vehicle with no cover as shots are being fired at them. I am sure we will find out.

They were using occupied civilian vehicles as human shields. It's a wonder more innocents weren't killed.

This absolutely appalling highway shootout yesterday encapsulates the under-trained, military-cosplaying, Punisher-wannabe cops who permeate America's police departments.

When you lose a family member violently in a shoot out let me know. It would appear the cops went Fallujah on the UPS truck. If they did what I think they did it was malpractice on the part of the officers. It must be investigated as is any shooting and facts established.

Can you point to the law that says they can’t shield themselves by a civilian vehicle when in the middle of a shootout.

Tis better to kill two innocent (Don't forget about the other victim who was shot and died for having the audacity to get stuck in traffic) citizens, than 4 jewel thieves go free.

The event was a monumental f'up putting civilians, who were stuck in a crossfire at risk, because the cops were using them as cover.

I would be asking the regular route driver who called in sick a lot of questions... a mere coincidence?

It wasnt over jewelry, it was over two armed robbers. And taking cover behind a vehicle is bad, but the alternative is to step out and get gunned down. Then the bad guys can kill all they want, including those very people in the cars. Sometimes there’s no good alternative. Just bad Alternatives, and very bad alternatives

On another Thread someone said that the Perps had killed a Woman at the Jewelry Store which they concluded led to the Cops actions. That now appears to be false.

WTH were the Cops thinking, they were in the OK Corral?

Anyone got Odds that the UPS Driver as well as the guy in the Car were killed by “friendly fire”?

These perps were armed and dangerous and willing to kill.

I guess you think they should have just let that black guy escape when he rammed cars trying to get away in that infamous incident this year.. Forget his name. Cops mowed him down and the black community went on the warpath.

No, I cannot point to the specific law that says cops must not use human shields during gun fights.

I guess I didn’t think there needed to be one.

BTW, insurance rates of Brevard County are fixing to increase big time once the payout to the two victims occur.

This will be another case study similar to the 1986 FBI Miami shootout that will drastically shape future training regimens.

Wow, talk about dragging out work to maximize a pension. While I might be doing this myself to maximize SS, there is no reason for the reporter to add this tidbit into the story.

Cops should not have engaged in RUSH HOUR traffic, then use civilians as shields. You are talking in circles because the cops engagement caused an armed and dangerous situation.

At least the FBI in 1986 had the courtesy to "push" the perps to a less crowed area before they engaged. Still, they screwed up even back then.

Dealing with felons who are willing to kill is a dangerous business. Shit goes sideways. OFTEN.

You are not even willing to wait for the facts. Just blame the cops.

Go ahead..

But I won’t.

Go ahead and blame the PIGS. Scream on.

I won’t.

The only thing I will do is say there needs to be a full investigation...and there will be.

Idiotic rant by you.

How many innocents did the criminals kill to show they were a killing menace to the public?

The cops could follow them or keep them indefinitely in the truck. Either way, the cops wouldn’t be responsible for killing innocents.

There is ZERO justification with killing these people together. Period.

Of course, when you value jewelry over lives, as you do here, it becomes understandable.

“The robbers led police on a wild chase for 23 miles, firing at police in pursuit before the truck became stuck in traffic and the criminals opened fire as police closed in....After running several red lights and making harrowing maneuvers in an attempt to escape, the truck became stuck in traffic on Miramar Parkway near Flamingo Road around 5.30pm.”

Don’t see how the cops were wrong on this one.

What do you expect the cops to do? Shrug their shoulders? Do you really think they would have let the driver go peaceably? Or wouldn’t have seized someone else?

How about blaming armed robbers with a long history of violence shooting at people and running red lights?
