A friend of mine called this morning whod seen Clint Eastwoods Richard Jewell last night in Hollywood. She knew I was seeing it this morning in New York. Its going to upset your apple cart of an Oscar list, she said.
She was right. Eastwood, at 90, has made a jewel of a film in Richard Jewell, a real masterclass in filmmaking. Eastwood will have to be nominated for Best Director. The screenplay and music (by Arturo Sandoval) will have to be nominated. And the actors, the actors now roll right into the top 5 in their respective categories. Paul Walter Hauser is the most unlikely leading man as Jewell. Sam Rockwell, now on a run, goes into Best Supporting Actor. Kathy Bates in Supporting Actress.

“So I know whats going to happen with Midway itll be historical and Ill be following along and then all the sudden Woody Harrelson is going to show up wearing some historical outfit but hell still just be Woody Harrelson”
You give him to much credit, he will show up as Woody Boyd nitwit Cheers bartender.
Yeah - I enjoyed his character in I Tonya. Self-appointed super secret agent. LOL!
“Maybe my preparations will turn out to be unnecessary...that would be a pleasant surprise.”
You will be surprised. He made the movie Midway. Nailed it.
Yes, I think we’ll try and see this on the big screen. We saw Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, we gave it 4 out of 5 stars. It’s a tad long, that was our only issue really.
I am going to go see it.
I plan to also. But all this praise from Hollywood is worrisome. I can only assume it sugar coats the FIB’s role in framing him.
Harrison did nail Nimitz to the tee. Also Harrelson is is the same age as Nimitz was during the battle.
Yep, I hear you — people are what they are and the identify of the actor can never fully dissolve into the character (except in rare cases). But there is a problem of degree, where some some actors stay themselves more than others. I guess it’s less of a problem when the characters they play have a lot of overlap with their actual selves, as is probably the case with say John Wayne and his roles. My most recent experience with Woody Harrelson is in Hunger Games where he is almost literally himself and it pulls you out of your suspension of disbelief.
Lefties go out of their way to work with Clint. I can’t quite figure it out.
kate hepburn and meryl streep do the same for me. Neither can act and they stand there being themselves with the films washing around them.
Yeah. Half the reason people see movies is to see their favorites being themselves. John Wayne is always John Wayne. Even Clint Eastwood is always Clint Eastwood.
The only super-secret double-nought spy who had “operatives” and the perfect cover: living with his parents.
There’s at least money angle: He’s made countless money-making movies and you can count the duds on one hand with fingers to spare.
Harrelson was great as Nimitz. I thought Dennis Quaid even better as Admiral Halsey.
I will go see this film.
And look forward to watching
the part where Lin Wood sues
the MSM and wins.
Good bless Richards soul for the
sheer hell he went thru on Earth.
Saw MIDWAY last week, Ford vs Ferrari today and want to see Jewell. That’s three movies in a matter of weeks for a guy who’s last movie was Tom Hanks alone on the island, don’t even recall the name. What is that, about 20 years. They must be putting something in the Hollyweird water lately...
Midway was excellent. Totally non-political, and a story of heroism. Much better than the movie Pearl Harbor, in my opinion. Go see it.
Mr. Eastwood is a national treasure and a true Patriot. Thank you Sir, for bringing to light the truth concerning the corruption within the FBI and the multitude of injustices perpetrated by clowns within the current justice system.
I saw a preview a couple of days ago, and it looked very good.
I was so appalled when this happened because everybody knew that Richard Jewell was turned from hero to culprit because the FBI either couldnt or didnt want to say who was behind the bombing. But he fit the FBI profile for white lone wolf (which actually, based on the OKC bombing, means white Muslim terrorist catspaw). He was a sort of wannabe LEO, somewhat of a social outcast, not very attractive...wow, what could be better for the FBI?
I thought it was a disgraceful persecution of an innocent man who actually was a hero - he was observant and did the right thing at the right time, even if he didnt look like a hero. So Im going to the movie!
