When a Canadian Explained to Me the Horrors of Socialized Medicine
American Thinker ^ | 31 Oct, 2019 | Bonnie Cohen and Howard Sachs

I was in line at Costco — that wonderful example of American liberty, capitalism, the profit motive, and what it brings us — namely, a bounty of wonderful goods and services we freely choose, all at low cost and high quality. Costco is an example of what's right in America. So why not pass the time and strike up a conversation with the fellow customer in front of me?

I heard from her accent she was from Canada. I asked her about socialized medicine. I said to her that all the men and women of the American Left (the Democratic Party) tell us to look to Canada, to a big powerful government as a model of what we should seek to run our own health care here in America.

(snip)

It's ugly and scary."

She elaborated. She told me the tragic story of her sister, who had worked as a nurse in a hospital. She experienced some serious symptoms that needed further tests. She was put in a long queue to have an MRI. Her sister worked as a nurse. She could have pulled strings to get ahead of others waiting in the long line. She chose not to take advantage. Finally, seven months later, the scan was performed. The test revealed a cancer that was no longer treatable. My Costco line-mate said, "This happens all the time in our state-run Canadian system. You in America, you don't hear about these things, do you?"

Basically, the woman told her they were taxed so much that they were poor.

The operating tenet: the more socialism you have, the less freedom and discretionary cash you have. It's your choice America (use it wisely).

Quebecers are more euro than new world.

I also understand that they suck more wealth from the other provinces than they contribute.

Both points are true, they also believe they have the right to rule all of Canada, they just can't muster enough force to make it happen.

I have a Canadian relative who has spent a lifetime trying to unite Canadians in liberty, objectivity, opportunity, free enterprise and common sense.

He failed miserably.

Of course Canadian medical care isn't free. Somebody has to pay.

As for wait times, this occurs mainly in large urban centers where there are a lot of overdoses and a lot of refugees and "new Canadians" clogging the emergency rooms and the health care system in general with real and imagined ailments. I live in a small city in Northern Ontario with a new hospital. There are, seemingly, no waits here for tests or a hospital bed or to get treated in the ER. Not a lot of refugees or new Canadians here either. Coincidence?

Those over 65 do not have to pay for any drugs.

When you steal IP, drugs are naturally cheaper.

[[ I have yet to hear one complaint about their healthcare.]]

you need to spend some time researching online- the folks you are talking to who ‘love it’ very likely don’t face major health concerns and emergencies- and they just love getting medicines for ‘free’ not realizing that they are still paying through the nose for HC via taxes-

The itnernet is loaded with horror stories abotu Canadian HC-

There are waits. Follow the links, then plug in your city, hospital, or postal code...

When you make American taxpayers subsidize your country’s cost controls, your meds are naturally cheaper.

one other quick point- doctors there aren’t paid nearly what they are hear- so you aren’t going to get the quality care you receive here as their doctors aren’t motivated knowing the gov has set the limits on what can be charged-

Socialized HC sucks- Even here, there is a marked difference in the level of care a medicare patient gets and what someone with full blown insurance gets- Take away all private health insurance, and doctors all of a sudden don’t make anywhere near what doctors who can charge private health insurance full cost do-

one overlooked point is that the reason the socialized HC wait lines are so long is because everyone now gets ‘free HC’ so EVERYONE abuses it- going ot doctors for every little thing- they think “Heck, I’m paying taxes, might as well make use of it and soak the system by flooding the doctor’s offices every chance we get’

When people have to pay for insurance,e and have to pay insurance increases if they go over certain amounts, then people tend to only go to hospitals when it’s absolutely necessary- but when you give them HC for ‘free’ by taxing the hell out of them- they will ALWAYS abuse the system by running to the docs for every little ache, pain, or discomfort-

I ordered an MRI and told him that he should have the study in the next two or three days and I’ll have the report back in about 5 days.

I went to ER last month with pains in lower stomach<

Saw the Doc who diagnosed the problem Got a CAT scan "just to make sure"

Doc...here is the CAT scan report....you need some antibiotics for a week

Me...does it show anything about the Prostate?

Doc....Yes...its normal...no abnormalities seen

Doc.....we also noticed a gall stone

Me.....How big is it?

Doc....13mm diameter

Me....That's GREAT NEWS....this time last year it was 16mm in diameter.

Also....I worked as a hospital security guard some time ago....anyone with a head injury gets a CAT scan.

What I can’t figure out is why the Medicare for all push? Does the younger generation think Medicare is free? Far from it...we are average retired couple and pay $135 every month for basic part B coverage. Then between us we pay $460 for part B supplement, plan F. Then we pay a combined $70mo, part D prescription drug coverage ...very basic. My wife and I pay $700mo total for Medicare premiums. You could cut it in half, and young people still wouldn’t want to pay it. If you can’t see it or touch it they won’t buy in. They’d much prefer to pay the money for a new IPhone and maybe a car payment. The attitude is nobody will be turned away at an emergency room, insurance or not.

My case may be atypical but I was able to get an MRI within a week if I was willing to get it done at an odd hour at say 1 am. I was willing and did so. The relative fewer MRIs in Canada run round the clock and if I who am a nobody could do so I think most could. Now this was in Toronto so that may be atypical as well but that was my experience. The Canadian health care system is far from perfect but it’s not like everyone is dropping dead either.

I have a friend whose son spent a college semester in Denmark his senior year. He said that everything was horrifyingly expensive. He ate meals with the host family or at 7-11 because even a sandwich and drink at a restaurant would set you back at least twenty-five bucks U.S.

The minimum wage in Denmark is apparently around $25.

When I am there, I will ask bartenders, waitresses/waiters, Cashiers, guests at B&Bs "How do you like your healthcare"? Almost without exception, they are love it.

It's a great system---if you're healthy.
