When my daughter Elen, now L/CPL Elen, USMC, was volunteering for a wildlife rescue, she took a class on caring for infant wildlife. One of the lessons was about rescuing the babies from dead mother opossums and rearing them.

Coyotes get some deer around here, according to the County Ag people.

It’s illegal to do that, y’know.

Sure is where I live. And you might get yourself hurt.

Congratulations and thanks to you and your daughter!

Much as I love animals, I gotta add one other thing... Possums have to be God's stupidest creatures. I am sure they've only got three neurons: one for eating, one for mating, and one for hissing. None left for staying off the road. But I love 'em in spite of their limitations.

They remind me of James Clapper. But for him, no love.

My deer hunting friends whom I permit to hunt my land supply me with all the venison I want, so my own firearms have been reserved for backyard plinking, and occasionally putting a fatally injured critter out of its misery. I don't know that I'd try shooting a possum out of a tree; aiming high strikes me as a bit risky -- seems like if I missed, that round might end up somewhere it doesn't belong. The property line is only a half-mile away. :-)

You don't hear any accounts of them roaming in packs but rather just solitary sightings. A couple weeks ago a friend who lives in Warren said he saw a female with two pups behind his house on the other side of his fence that borders a wooded area.

From Google wiki, in accord with your friend's report:

Although coyotes live in family groups, they usually travel and hunt alone or in loose pairs. In this way they are different from wolves, which sometimes leads to the impression that coyotes do not form packs since they are usually seen alone.

Wolves, now, there you have another--and murderous--cup of tea.

We used to get venison when my father hunted, but we haven’t had any in years. I have some church friends who hunt deer on their own land; maybe I’ll ask if they have any meat on offer.

I grew up in northern Michigan in the 50's thru the 60's and I never saw a turkey in my life. Now they're everywhere down here and you see them in the darndest places.

My parents were born and raised in a tiny village on the Little Manistee River. I spent most every weekend and Summer living there.

I never saw turkeys when I was a kid but now there are several large flocks living all around the area.

Also, I saw only one bear in the Lower Peninsula through the time I graduated high school and went into the Air Force. Now black bear will come out of the woods and walk through the back yard of our yard. When I go out to cut fire wood I now carry a 10mm carbine and a 10mm pistol.

Can't hurt to ask. Personally I love it, and consider it healthier than most store-bought meat. My wife is uninterested, says it tastes unpleasant to her. To each their own.

Gotta wonder — If you put that kid out in the wild with a .22 rifle, no dad around, told him to go enjoy himself...what do you suppose he’d do?

I don’t claim to be an expert. I gave up hunting about 12 years ago when I took a job transfer and it just wasn’t possible to “get off work” to do so.

But around the time I gave it up, the eastern coyotes were appearing in the capital region of Pennsylvania. One of the theories is that so-called western coyotes (a naturally smaller animal) have cross-bred with wild dogs or wolves resulting in a larger animal that fills a different biological niche. A niche that might include taking larger animals like young deer. Sounds reasonable.

I never saw any either. With that being said, I had two uncles in northern Michigan and along with their sons, they were big time bear hunters who used to hunt the U.P.......Frequently buying and trading their bear dogs. Fortunately, Uncle Hylon was a veterinarian and he was able to patch up any of the dogs that got injured.

In my lifetime bear have always been in the UP, but the LP had very few.

When I was four years old we took a two week camping trip. Took the car ferry from Ludington to Manitowoc, WI then through the UP and then over the Bridge to home. Camping one night in the UP and heard a lot of noise outside the tent. There was a bear wandering through our campsite.

Hi Tax-chick,

I happened upon your profile page and noticed the “Morning Kitteh Ping List”. Could you add me to that (assuming it’s active)? I’m on Slings and Arrows’ “Kitty Ping List”, but yours seems to be different? Thanks in advance.

Darn shame about PhotoBucket changing their policy - I notice your photos are blurred out. Same thing happened to me, and I had to pull all my photos from PB and have them hosted elsewhere. Nevertheless, congrats on your fine family! (if somewhat blurry ;-) )

Hoping you and yours have a happy, peaceful, and blessed day,
Dayglored

Story made the NY Post and Daily Caller.

They’re gonna get their 15 minutes of fame.

Poor kid. Would a father having his child abusively confront a stranger, that’s known to be carrying arms, be parental child abuse? I’d sure think so.

Then go look it up the released state hunting season data. It’s easy to find. Even in Alabama we can read the hunting season regulations and purchase our hunting license online.

Don’t get me started on having to buy a hunting and fishing license. That is freaking stupid. License to hunt or fish is so anti constitutional.

I’m in NJ at the moment for the next two months for family stuff. My mom and dad live on Raritan Bay, Union Beach. Its duck season right now. Homes are maybe 100 yards away from our spot. I’m going out in a few with my 10 gauge semi auto. It raining right now, perfect conditions. You can see lower Manhattan and Coney Island Brooklyn in one direction, Staten Island the other. It pretty interesting, imho.

Take care and make it a great dsy.
