Highest death rate, 100 million Americans have pre-diabetes and diabetes. One of the highest rates of heart disease.
Life expectancy for females is 54.9 years, not 34.9 years.
“Anything more than a walk around the park for an elderly person.”
Is 72 elderly?
I can't take a lot of credit. God has blessed me with health and I just enjoy doing it. Certainly, nobody needs to work out like I do to be healthy and lean. Walking and a proper diet is all you need after 50. I just love doing it. Some people play golf, some people work in the garage, some bike, some just watch TV. I just have fun in the gym. It's what makes me happy. Holding 200 pounds over your head makes you focus and forget all the problems in your life. It's my stress relief. For those moments I can forget everything else and just have fun.
It's interesting that there are now three global studies that show that virtually every type of exercise extends life span except one. Marathon running. The extended steady state cardio tends to kill you off earlier. Short intense bursts are much better for your heart. Remember, Jim Fixx who started the running craze in the 70's with his book "The Joy of Running" - kicked off in his 40's while running. That's why I limit my runs to 5K and when I'm ripping up I rely on interval and circuit training.
I am more concerned about the physical damage that is done by the constant pounding to the body (other than a heart attack like Fixx). Although, apparently the pounding can affect the heart, too.
Anyway, add 20 to 50 pounds to the body and it compounds the problem. Not that a person who is overweight would be running a marathon. However, they may attempt it and train. Best to lose the weight first.
True there are shoes that reduce the impact force. It helps, but there is still a huge amount of force being applied to the legs, back, and body and continuously for a long period of time. Not good.
One thing that will end an exercise regimen the quickest is an injury. I wish that I had been more careful in my younger days. I have knee issues, too. I remember having shin splints so bad that I couldn't walk up stairs. This is why I chose a bike and hiking. Although I tended to load up my backpack for the day hikes — I believed in “being prepared.”
Genetics is a huge part of it.
I met a guy once who was 55 and continuously ran long distances. He was a rarity and definitely not my body type and genetics.
Agreed about the stress release. Nothing like exercise and the endorphins.
I enjoyed exploring the city on a bike and I saw some very interesting things and traveled through some very interesting areas. One area was next to a waste treatment plant. “As you are huffing and puffing up a hill, the smell hits you.” And it was interesting to see what they did with all of that waste after it sat in settling ponds. It sat it outside in piles to dry and then it was hauled it off somewhere (maybe to a dump). It was very dark, even black pellets. Probably good fertilizer.
I shot lots of pictures during my hikes. Saw some elk and deer and one person claimed that I was being “watched” by a mountain lion. Saw bear sign but never bears and huge wolf spiders. Hey I am pretty certain even saw Jennifer Garner once a long the trail. She was shooting a movie in the nearby city. Her trailer/bus was parked in the parking lot.
LOW CARB / KETO PING!!!
Thanks ‘Evil’. Been a while, but this article appears worthy of a ping!
[p.s., anyone wanting to join, or leave, my Low-Carb ping list, just let me know, privately or publicly]
KETO evangelist here. It is amazing. Mrs Drango loves it too.
My Paleo evolved into a Mediterranean diet, 2-3 years ago away from the carb loaded/recommended diets.
My weight has stabilized since then and lab values across the board are excellent.
We eat 3 meals each day and snack on fresh fruit/veggies and
nuts, when we feel like it.
Our doctor says that when people move carbs to the bottom or basically eliminate them, many people end up with the lab values like we have.
He says that my wife’s lab values are like those of a late 20 year old in training. She will be 80.
I’ve been watching a lot of Dr. Berg videos over the past few months, I’ve learned that everything I “knew” about nutrition was wrong.
People buzzing around on e-scooters instead of walking.
It’s not just carbs, it’s carbs AND high-fat.
Pick one or the other, you cannot have both. And with fats, you feel much more sated.
Also, fats when consumed without carbs, do not raise your blood sugar. This is why a person feels sated.
Also, the body can produce carbs, but it cannot produce Essential Fatty Acids on its’ own.
“produce carbs” during ketosis.
He's now having trouble with his feet, of all things. The pleasant young podiatrist showed him the x-rays of his feet, and pointed out a certain curvature of his metatarsal bones.
"At some point you've had stress fractures here, and here.", while pointing at each foot.
Thx.
It is similar to people lifting a lot of weight to get fit. BTW, weight training alone is not sufficient IMO. You need to add cardiovascular training as well.
So, the best solution is exercise in moderation and balance (a mix of aerobic and anaerobic exercise with an emphasis on aerobic).
There’s one thing Dr. Berg constantly emphasizes, and it’s pure gold.
You don’t lose fat to get healthy, you get healthy to lose fat.
A lot of people get hung up and quit eating healthy, because the results don’t necessarily show up in terms of weight/fat loss. But the fact is, even on a calorie-restricted diet, or any regimen, it takes time to repair the damage, so that the body can start effectively burning off your fat stores.
“Food Pyramid” - one of the great frauds perpetrated on modern society.
“Human-caused Climate Change” is another.
