There's a good chance you hallucinated this week without ever knowing it

In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions — primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.

Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.

They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If you’re presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world – that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.

[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception — an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations — but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

Yep! That’s it!

I’ve been using Firefox. Would that have anything to do with why I couldn’t see it?

After high school I needed transport for work and classes...first thought was a used bug-eyed Sprite as one was owned by a neighbor across the street.

While searching the paper's classified ads came across an 8 year old
1958 Jaguar XK-150 Roadster...well now, clearly I had set my sights too low as an XK-150 Coup has been on the top of my dream list since a colleague of my dad had a glorious red one in which I was privileged to park my fevered body on several occasions.

With that memory in mind I immediately placed the call to the owner, a USN Commander just returned from Europe. The jewel was available for a mere $800, less than I had saved. And thus began my relationship of love and despair with beauty and power and the deceitful Lucas electrics and the lackluster Coventry supply chain.

Ended up with a spare transmission with the same electric Laycock de Normanville overdrive as I had...sadly I had to pass on a D Jag engine as too expensive...should have borrowed the money. Ahhh....first loves.

“...Should have borrowed the money”

Isn’t hindsight an amazing thing.

I’m guessing you still have the XK (hoping).

Lucas Electics....the reason NASA got to the moon first. (Actually true)

Am continuing with better half the conversation of heading west Friemds visited Zion and they gave us a glowing report of the area, so YES we do wish to visit. Better Half and I have a National Parks card purchased about six years ago where we enter at no charge. Business (personal) has kept us tied in knots for about four years and outlook is grim for breaking away. Better Half and I do dream of visiting ... Maybe God will allow a visit soon. Better Half and I have agreed we have begun our last project. So once more ..... perhaps soon

I would be delighted to have you and to meet your Better Half! It sounds like a lot of fun, and there are so many Parks “nearby.”

Please keep it in mind, and let me know.

"Better Half and I do dream of visiting ... Maybe God will allow a visit soon."

April 8th, 2024 Total eclipse of the sun.

We saw the one in August of 2017. It's awesome!

My son-in-law said that it had not been on his bucket list, but he was checking it off anyway.

We didn’t see the total eclipse, but we met NicknamedBob, which was super cool on its own! We’ve also experienced a cookout with No-to-illegals and his Better Half, and that was great fun: I recommend them as guests. And of course, we sponsored the Royal Progress East of the Mississippi for Monkey Face on two occasions.

For someone who doesn’t get out much, I have a heck of a social life!

I enjoy meeting people but CFIDS causes me to be clumsy in the social graces. Or at least the ones that really count. However, if that can be overlooked, the enjoyment I receive in either visiting or being visited makes up for all my clumsiness! (Or, at least I hope so!)

So having someone come to see this beautiful part of the country is really something I look forward to. :o])

I love scenery, myself ...

Good morning. I might have slept in until 5:30, but Jake decided to start a fight with Shannon, who was sleeping in the Best Cat Chair in my bedroom. The Best Cat Chair is not, since you asked, the best chair for a cat, but the chair for the best cat.

They both went outside. It’s cooler this morning. The wind shifted to the north overnight.

Morning kitteh sez “Time a ge’ UP!”

Good morning.

I slept in until 0330. My bad. But no cat to wake me. Even the birds will stay quiet until I take the cover off the cage. Camilla is settling in quite well, now that she’s in with Gonzo.

The week was more stressful than I thought when it was happening, or I wouldn’t have slept so long.

My Avon lady called last night. First she sent me a text to ask if I was awake (just barely) then called and said, “I decided, ‘what the heck’ since you’re awake!” After a few minutes of talk about what’s been going on and how it affected us (she said she had wanted more time with her kids!) and actually called it a quarantine, which it is. Anyway, sweet girl, she offered to shop for me if I didn’t feel like going during the “senior hours” which Walmart has finally started. So I told her to call me when she next goes and if there is something I want or need, I will ask her. Like ice cream in individual cups!

Anyway, a day of movie-watching awaits.

Which reminds me: When I turned on the TV this morning (always background noise) there, staring at me from a time before Murdoch Mysteries, was a very young, very cute, Yannick Bisson!! THAT got my heart started, for sure! :o])

And I just started the day with Jake. Some people have all the luck!

(Lovely young man, just lovely.)

I might watch a TV program today. Maybe something involving travel. I really need to work on the potholders for Tom the Son!

Speaking of Tom the Son, he’s been sort of on the outs with his grandmother for a few years, due to her telling him in no uncertain terms that she expected him to have graduated from high school a long time ago, but it’s really my fault for having favored him, etc. (Control freak over 80 ...)

Anyway, she emailed yesterday to say that, if his additional roommate hadn’t turned up to pay a cut of the rent yet (he did), she would make a cash contribution to help Tom and Tucker keep a roof over their heads until the economy picks up again.

If I had a loom and some loops, I’d make potholders for me! Maybe some day!

And speaking of a lovely young man, I have an older version of him in the DVD at the moment, waiting for the next dose of pills so I can have breakfast as I watch, just to mask the drool.
