There's a good chance you hallucinated this week without ever knowing it

In the 1950s, researchers stumbled upon a new class of drugs that provided relief for those suffering from schizophrenia. These drugs were known as antipsychotics and, as the name suggests, they reduced symptoms like hallucinations and delusions — primarily by reducing the levels of dopamine in the brain. This led clinicians and scientists to argue that dopamine was linked to the experiences of psychotic symptoms, and a concerted research effort ensued, seeking to solve the puzzle of why excess dopamine might produce hallucinations.

Although it was later shown that increasing dopamine could produce hallucinations, establishing a consistent link between them, it has not been clear why.

They achieved this by taking advantage of a simple fact: Your brain is lazy. It makes shortcuts to understand the deluge of information that bombards it daily. If you’re presented with consistent information, consistently, your brain adjust its expectations of reality in turn. This is the basis of Bayesian theories of how we perceive the world – that is, the brain makes inferences about the world around us based on statistics and probabilities on what is likely to occur.

[I]ncreasing dopamine made it more difficult for participants to adjust their perception — an effect comparable to how the hallucinators had struggled. Moreover, the extent to which participants struggled was strongly associated with the severity of hallucinations — but not with any diagnosis of schizophrenia. In other words, the difficulty appeared to be associated with a symptom, not a diagnosis.

Using brain imaging, the researchers also showed that an increased capacity for dopamine release, from a part of the brain known as the striatum (an area involved in schizophrenia), was associated with the severity of hallucinations. Together, these experiments showed that excess dopamine was associated with difficulty in accurately predicting reality.

My garage wouldn’t be big enough for my van even if we put everything else in the yard.

Mine are always 20 per page, even though I think I've got it set for 100 or whatever the max is. *May* have something to do with my level of activity, it makes the server start giving off smoke.

Too easy. On the other hand, one can always eat a chocolate egg, if it’s a small egg. A large chocolate egg takes pre-planning.

I just sent an email to my parish’s building committee bigshots, explaining why we think putting the choir at the back of our new church - maybe in a loft? - is a super bad idea. To be fair, it’s the Bishop’s idea, not our guys’.

DP made me cut the part where I said, “How could choir members silently, but with unmistakable gestures, threaten their small children with death and dismemberment if they don’t sit down Right Now? How could they quietly indicate to the Altar Servers, who happen to be their sons, that they should sit up straight and stop playing with their shoelaces, or they won’t get cake?”

Instead, I waxed poetically about the fact that the “music ministers” are core members of the congregation, sharing the liturgy with their family and friends, rather than hirelings who could be replace by recordings that meet “objective” aesthetic standards.

I could have said (but it didn’t occur to me until just now) that they can build it, but we won’t come. If they build a choir area somewhere in the back, we’ll still set up in front or slightly off to the side and nail the blues arrangement of the Responsorial Psalm, with finger snaps and hip wiggles ... even if it’s pure acoustic.

Thanks. The max is 250 per page, I found when I checked “My Preferences.” Maybe there was a reset.

It’s supposed to be a 2-car garage, but neither my van nor my husband’s truck will fit, and bad things happen when teens try to park a car in the garage.

We try to move the vehicles around so the HOA doesn’t know how many we have.

Thank you TC for your expression of empathy. Sorry to hear about Cub Scout Mom’s encounter with bear. The attraction of the wild? and the wild around our neighborhoods is becoming or morphing into exceedingly dangerous wildness or wilderness. Used to believe that pumas posed no threat to our local but am now not as certain as once was .... May all be wonderful for you and yours and may you and yours be surrounded by God’s protection.

In Las Vegas, one of the local TV stations has an “HOA Hall of Shame” segment designed to embarrass said HOA organizations for their strict, impractical, impossible-to-enforce rules. Nasty things, those. But since Las Vegas is Scam City, its not surprising.
