Travelling to Florida's Atlantic Coast - Need Advice

Posted on 09/19/2019 7:54:37 AM PDT by MplsSteve

OK, the wife and I are planning a week long vacation in early October. We're flying into Orlando, spending a few days there and then heading eastward and then north along the Atlantic Coast. I don't think we'll go much further than Saint Augustine.

Yeah, there's the obvious places to go - like Kennedy Space Center. Saint Augustine looks very interesting too. There's a few national parks I wanna check out along the way too. I'd even settle more good recommendations that are even a bit inland from the coast.

I'm up for anything in the way of recommendations - restaurants (yes, we're gonna stop at a Waffle House), attractions, parks (local, state and national), accommodations, etc.

I'd appreciate any ideas you can give me. Thank you!

Treasure Island. The best seashells I have ever seen on a beach.

Saint Augustine is very nice. It is the oldest continuous city in the United States. There are buildings in the old town dating back to the Spanish colonial era including a Vauban style fortress. There are gorgeous hotels, two of them converted to other uses, from the last 19th century built by Henry Flagler who is the father of Florida tourism. The center of town has a Spanish style central square and park.

Also just outside old St. Augustine is the Nombre de Dios Spanish mission marking the place where the Spanish landed.

We always used A1A, it’s slow but always meant Florida
to us.

Yeah. When I was a child in the late 60's, a family trip to St. Augustine and the old jail was on the agenda

Fast forward 20 years to when I moved to Florida, and took my then wife to the old jail in St Augustine.
And.......everything was EXACTLY as it was 20 years ago, I don't even think it had even been painted
But anyway, several good places to eat there

I would avoid “The Pulse Nightclub” while in Orlando. Just sayin. ;-)

There are several neat warbird museums if you’re into that - see the FL section: http://www.warbirdalley.com/museum.htm

It’s worth a drive down A1A through Miami Beach just to see ‘the way it was’. Enjoy.

Believe it or not, I have lived in north central Florida just west of St. Augustine for 8 years and I have never been there.

Too much work on the cattle farm. Maybe someday.

I hear the old fort is an interesting visit. The oldest school house in the nation is there too.

A co-worker whose daughter attended Flagler College in St. Augustine says a Spanish restaurant called Columbia is the best in town. The family and I have eaten very good Cuban sandwiches at La Herencia Café.

I think Ripley’s “Believe it or not” museum was in
St. Augustine.

I think you can get a lifetime pass to national parks, if you are over a certain age.

Don’t drive the interstate...Use highway A1A for your trip from Daytona to St Augustine...Lot of stuff to see and do along there...

With the hurricane just passing through Daytona I couldn’t recommend it. But I do love the hard pack beaches there and the small poker casino with paramutual wagering on dogs and TVG broadcasts on horses.

I remember the Old Jail and Fountain of Youth from visits as a child. The fort is great, too. Fast forward 40+ years, and I discover this place is dive bar heaven. Rock bands playing, people having fun, very comfortable demographically. It’s ok to wear a MAGA hat. The Ice Plant is a great place. Also Cap’s Seafood. I think I need another visit down there!
