This is the great mystery of human vision: Vivid pictures of the world appear before our minds eye, yet the brains visual system receives very little information from the world itself. Much of what we see we conjure in our heads.
A lot of the things you think you see youre actually making up, said Lai-Sang Young, a mathematician at New York University. You dont actually see them.
New research suggests mathematics is the key.
The visual cortex has a mind of its own.
You may think of the brain as taking a photograph of what you see in your visual field, Young said. But the brain doesnt take a picture, the retina does, and the information passed from the retina to the visual cortex is sparse.
They hope to decipher, for example, why we can perceive the flashes in a blinking traffic light, but we dont see the frame-by-frame action in a movie

The real question is
“Why are the eyes the windows to a person’s soul?”
Is it the bipolar neurons in the eyes allowing a reflection of consciousness outward as photo re emptor information goes inward?
“Amazing thing this human brain, brought to you by evolution over billions of years. /s”
Nope.
G_d made ‘em, in a whole bunch less time.

Believe half of what you see, son, and none of what you hear
A line I heard often from my career Navy father!
I thought it was a Navy thing?
Years before Marvin Gaye.
A person who is born blind has dreams, but doesn’t see images. Dreams could include sounds, tactile information, odors, flavors, and feelings. On the other hand, if a person has sight and then loses it, dreams may include images. People who have impaired vision (legally blind) do see in their dreams.Jan 23, 2019

We experience a dream guided by the senses.
I thoroughly HATE stupid analogies. What the hell does "one-quarter the size of a full moon" mean? Why can't a somewhat technical journal just specify area in square inches or millimeters or use some technical measurement?
The moon has a total surface area of 14,647,440 square miles. At full, half of it is illuminated. One-quarter of that is 1,830,929 square miles. Is the author saying our eyeballs have a visual area of 1.8 million square miles?
Or is Hartnett saying that the subtended arc of our vision is 1/4 of the arc of the full moon? That can't be as we would all have tunnel vision.
“G_d made em, in a whole bunch less time.” What is a “G_d?”
So when I see a really hot babe, am I really seeing one or imagining it??
That can depend.
Are you wearing beer goggles?
How late in the evening is it?
Are you lonesome tonight?...
Good article. The summary would seem to be “Vision is impossible, yet we have it.”
What the hell does “one-quarter the size of a full moon” mean?
I took that as, the equivalent fraction of our field of vision. With or without the moon illusion, I don’t know?
LOL
Beer goggles!! I remember those.
It has to do with relativity.
The same girl at 9pm in the club when you’re sober will ook FIFTEEN TIMES hotter at 3am with 14 beers in your.
The equation is
GIRL = BeerTime squared

This model excludes the primary processor, consciousness itself.
Gamma rhythms are normally a synchronization in the subconscious theta frequencies when the overall consciousness reaches high gamma frequencies. The do called synchronized field they speak of is actually consciousness itself.
It would be difficult to detect true gamma frequency in primates as this frequency is usually associated o ly in humans after the prefrontal cortex has fully developed around age 25.
The gamma frequency is a much much higher frequency range that they present as it is the consciousness frequency of the mystics and is what gives them their abilities.
I don’t know. For not receiving much information from the eyes, the brain seems to divert much attention to visual input. At any time you are watching a speaker, and your eyes wander to another focal point, the ears quickly disengage. Stare out a window, look at an email, or just look at a table on a handout, whatever transpires audibly during that diversion is backburnered.

Those who have been abused by illogic in politics have known the above for eons.
My nephew with a Ph.D. in math works on optics at JPL for the space program. He’ll be all over this.
