Taps Run Dry in Zimbabwe’s Capital City - 2 Million People With Running Water Only Once a Week

...life without water is a daily nightmare endured in Zimbabwe's capital city, Harare, where more than two million people only have running water once a week, according to the New York Times.

The water shortage there means residents ration bathroom trips and stand in interminable lines to fill buckets and cans at communal boreholes. One mother profiled by the New York Times got in line at 3 a.m. By the afternoon, she was still standing in line.

The boreholes are a problem too since they are so polluted. "Water-borne diseases linked to these boreholes are on the rise, but people have had to take in their own hands water supply because the utility has failed to provide water," said Jean-Marie Kileshye-Onema, network manager of WaterNet, as Climate Change News reported.

The water rationing started in June in the country's two major cities, Harare and Bulawayo. The economics of water purification are also working against Zimbabwe. The city government has had to work a critical shortage of purifying chemicals, which cost in excess of $3 million per month, according to CNN.

"We are using more chemicals and we have not been able to procure enough safe chemicals as a result, we are targeting to provide water to our residents with a minimum of once a week' supply of the precious liquid," said Mabhena Moyo, Harare's Acting Water director, as CNN reported.

The shortage, which started in January but has been exacerbated in July, is due to an awful drought year from the climate crisis. Poor water management has also squandered the remaining water. An estimate of 45 to 60 percent of the water that's left in Harare reservoirs is lost through leakage and theft, said Herbert Gomba, the mayor of Harare, as the New York Times reported.

"There is a rotational water supply within the five towns," said Michael Chideme, Harare city council corporate communications manager, to Climate Change News. "Some people are getting water five days a week especially in the western suburbs, but the northern suburbs are going for weeks without a drop in their taps."

The water crisis has raised fears of a cholera outbreak or other waterborne diseases, especially in areas where residents have lived without water for three months, said Community Water Alliance, an NGO, as CNN reported.

BTW, I NEVER thought of preparing for ANY event that would have implications for more than a day.

I am guessing you are not from the mid-atlantic states.

Though I know some who prepare here.

I don’t and you’ve just opened my eyes to the need for it.

Sandy should have done that!!

Drove a cab right before and after it. It was VERY surreal.

Did this problem occur in Rhodesia, the bread basket of Africa?

Sandy was a great dry run for preppers; average people could see the limitations of what the government could do for them - and realized what they should be doing for themselves.

Yeah but you don’t know how thick my skull is.

FIVE times thicker than the average person’s :)

I need to start planning, at least in some small way.

I guess you don’t have to if you’ve got wheels - you just “bug out” instead of “shelter in place”...

I was impressed at how orderly it remained over the days without power; I sympathized with those in worse-hit areas that dealt with it for months instead of days or weeks. In addition to individuals and their plans, companies got to test their disaster plans as well.

Sad the obvious and predictable is ignored by the American & UK main stream media.

The once beautiful, calm, peaceful city of Salisbury (now Harare) has reversed into another African failed city!

The great betrayal of the Ian Smith government & citizens by the UK and leftist do-gooders in America!

I was born in Tornado Alley, used to live on the Gulf Coast; currently in northern VA, where we had an earthquake a few years ago and keep track of hurricanes moving up the Carolina coast. So, having that mind set comes somewhat easily. Emergencies, even very private ones, can happen anywhere.

Just remember, with Leftists there is no ‘End Game’. There is no point where they will say something like “Enough of us destroying everything, we’ll back off and let the free market start fixing it” (in this case).

How do we know. Think about EVERY leftist cause, where they started, and where they are now:

1) Feminism: STARTED: Equality for Women; NOW: Destroying the lives of young men in college because a girl didn’t like the way a date turned out the night before.

2) Civil Rights: STARTED: Equality for Blacks; NOW: Quotas, with far more qualified whites and particularly Asians being pushed aside for blacks and Hispanics.

3) Gays: STARTED: Leave us Alone in our Bedrooms; NOW: Gay ‘marriage’, gays in our schools talking about ‘bullying’, Drag Queens reading stories to little kids, and soon, the normalizing of pedophilia.

Giving them what they want simply makes them DEMAND MORE...they never go away. Think about ‘gay marriage’. 30 years ago the country was rightly disgusted with it, as had been the case for 5000 years of recorded history...now the majority of people approve. Did people change on a dime that fast? No way. Instead they kept at it and at it, and finally people simply gave up resisting...and so now they go after our kids.

As Obama used to say:

“You didn’t build it.”

Yup.

White people did.

The white people are gone.

Oops.

“But Africa CERTAINLY doesn’t corner the market and bad government, bad living conditions and insane policy.”

Well stated. One does not need to be Sherlock Holmes to figure that out.

Thank you for the example of a now rare virtue. To claim righteousness you must first actually be righteous.

“According to the 2017 Inter Censal Demography Survey by the Zimbabwe National Statistics Agency 69.2 percent of Zimbabweans belong to Protestant Christianity, 8.0 percent are Roman Catholic, in total 84.1 percent follow one of the denominations of Christianity. 10.2 percent of the population doesn’t belong to any religion, while the 0.7 percent is Muslim.”

Nope.
These people have what they voted for. They MURDERED people to achieve their current state.
Any efforts to help them will be hindered by their own corruption.
No sympathy for them whatsoever, until they repent.
In this case, repentance starts by putting the heads of the current kleptocrats - and their families - in duffle bags.

Yet another sh**hole country comes under light. What a rotten “civilization” there. However, they are not alone. The malignant combo of corrupt “leaders”, no or weak moral base and little desire to sacrifice for civil society is interesting to observe...from afar.
