Study Links Fluoridated Water During Pregnancy to Lower IQs
The Daily Beast ^ | 8/19/2019 | Shira Feder

An influential medical journal published a study Monday that links fluoride consumption during pregnancy with lower childhood IQs—a finding that could undermine decades of public-health messaging, fire up conspiracy theorists, and alarm mothers-to-be.

The research was expected to be so controversial that JAMA Pediatrics included an editor’s note saying the decision to publish it was not easy and that it was subjected to “additional scrutiny.”

“It is the only editor’s note I’ve ever written,” Dimitri Christakis, editor in chief of JAMA Pediatrics and a pediatrician, told The Daily Beast. “There was concern on the journal’s editorial team about how this would play out in the public eye and what the public-health implications would be.”

About three-fourths of the United States drinks fluoridated tap water—which the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention declared one of the 10 greatest public-health achievements of the 20th century because it dramatically reduces tooth decay.

A handful of earlier studies have suggested that prenatal fluoride exposure could affect neurodevelopment, but many experts considered those to be substandard. The new study, vetted by the premier medical publisher in the U.S., is seen as more rigorous.

“When we started in this field, we were told that fluoride is safe and effective in pregnancy,” said study co-author Christine Till of York University in Toronto. “But when we looked for the evidence to suggest that it’s safe, we didn’t find any studies done on pregnant women.”

Fluoride in water goes to developing teeth, fluoride in toothpaste only targets erupted teeth, so the benefits are completely different.

But how many people drink unfiltered tap water anyway?

My Mother led the fight in the early 60s to stop it,m lost out to the smarmy local Dentists. The ones who complained were the ones that did such s shoddy job on my teeth that I have had 3 crowns in the last 6 weeks.

One of the municipalities was thinking about fluoridating the water, so I got curious and looked up the toxicity LD 50/30 per kg body weight for fluoride.

The level of efficacy is not very far from the level of toxicity and a small error in dosage at a water treatment plant could cause dangerous problems.

I suggested that it might not be a good idea for public works to be administering medication to people en masse.

If people are worried about getting enough fluoride, take supplements where the dosage can be closely controlled.

Large cities are probably more likely to fluoridate their water, but most public water supplies probably do, whether in a large city or not.

If you have your own well, your water is almost certainly not fluoridated.

An unpublished study showed that babies born to mothers who drank fluoridated water and attended private schools or were home schooled had higher IQ’s.......So who ya gonna believe.

You forgot your sarcasm tag. But I get your point. They also should have factored in the parents’ IQs to compare the changes in IQ between the fluoridated and non-fluoridated groups.

Hoping that some people are smart enough to perform tests on this, and also whether sodium fluoride is safe to put in water and in every danmed tube of toothpaste in the supermarket!

Seafood. Seaweed is pretty low in mercury in case you are pregnant and packed with good stuff including metabolizable iodine.

I agree about medicating populations but the dosage in fluoride supplements is way higher than you can drink.

You get enough fluoride from your toothpaste if you brush at least once a day.

Without swallowing the toothpaste, eh?

Sodium Fluoride is not needed by the body; it is an industrial waste product.

The negative effects of fluoridation have been known for decades. Totalitarian regimes have been using it since the 1930s, ostensibly to pacify the masses.

Regardless, what is indisputable is that the form of fluoride in the teeth is not SF, but another compound, and excess consumption of toxic halogens and halides reduces usable Iodine in the body.

Americans are consuming far more toxic halogens and halides - fluoride, chlorine (versus chloride), bromide - and far less iodine/iodide than one hundred years ago.

From c. 1830 to c. 1930, Lugol’s Solution (Iodine in both ionic and elemental form, iodide plus iodine) was a standard item in a Medical Doctor’s pharmacopia - before Big Pharma essentially banished all natural remedies.

This is one reason that Japanese tend to be more healthy overall: They consume sea foods that are rich in iodine.
