International Cat Day: Cats understand their names and are probably just choosing to ignore you [tr]

Have you ever wondered whether your cat is ignoring you because it doesn't understand its name? Several researchers from Japan did, so they tried to get to the bottom of it.

And we have bad news: According to a study published in Scientific Reports, the researchers found that cats are able to distinguish their names from other random sounds.

Which clearly means that, yes, your cat is just choosing not to respond to your calls to come hang out.

Food fight! Castro, the fool has yet to learn, you don’t mess with Texas. Never eaten BBQ down there. We once had a terrific place closer to home, Clarks BBQ. Yummyoso! Sadly, he died and the establishment fell apart becoming nothing more than a smoke filled building. Several months ago, we stopped thinking we’d grab a few BBQ sandwiches to go. The pirates wanted $15.00 for 4 pieces of bread, an unknown quantity of poor quality bbq, and a splash of Tabasco. No drinks, fries, or other goodies. Just 2 sandwiches. At one time they made the absolute best Chicken Fried Steak. It covered the entire plate. Umm good with French fries and cream gravy, as well as the fried okra.

This man has become our guru for Texas cooking. LOL not that we really need one. But he is interesting to watch and shares some new food ideas.

Liza is a motivated third worlder from the Philippines.

Her childhood had no TV nor anything like ours.

Education was her early life and entertainment.

Then it was off to work ... self supporting by the age of 19 or so.

We married in 2010 and the girl doesn't know the word relax.

Sorry your family didn’t scoop the litter box everyday (at least!) or clean up any accidents when they happened. I have 3 cats and you’d never know it.

Exactly the same thing I was thinking. Also, it sounds like you had unneutered males, whose urine is quite pungent. I have 2 spayed female kitties and you'd never know, except for the myriad of toys, that I have a cat. Certainly not by any odor.

Posted before, had a buddy from Jr HS, got a big male cat he named MF’r. My buddy was a large, rough type.

He got a great kick out of having people over for a BBQ in the backyard. He would call out “MF’r, come home”

The laughter as this big cat would come bounding into the back yard was great. He knew his name, and maybe his part in the festivities.

There’s no difference in the pronunciation of Blanco, whether in Spain or Texas.

I've discovered that our cat hates being told what to do but if it's something she actually wants to do, she'll do it a few minutes later. It just has to be her idea. Part of learning to speak "cat."

Of course they know their names. We had a wonderful cat officially named Tigris (short “i”), TigTig for short, sometimes Tig or Tiggy.

Once DH was talking about a TIC (pronounced “tick”), thermal imaging camera, and as soon as he heard “TIC”, Tig came running up, thinking he was called.

Just this morning we had to have our little Ginger euthanized. She was 17 years old, and the sweetest thing. Cancer.

They understand their names when you put it like, “Tigger, want COOKIE?”

I guess it could be argued that Tigger is responding to “cookie” and not his name. However, when I corrupt his name (e.g., “Tigger-loooooooo-oooou!”), he reacts by looking mildly annoyed, so there’s that.
