Have you ever wondered whether your cat is ignoring you because it doesn't understand its name? Several researchers from Japan did, so they tried to get to the bottom of it.
And we have bad news: According to a study published in Scientific Reports, the researchers found that cats are able to distinguish their names from other random sounds.
Which clearly means that, yes, your cat is just choosing not to respond to your calls to come hang out.

She knows her name. She moves the very tip of her tail whenever she hears it.
There were three of 'em at any one time, sometimes four.
When I was learning about girls and trying to date, I had two different beauties turn up their noses at this 13 year old and tell me I stank.
Now, do you want to confess to any pre-teen or early teen trama that stayed with you for life ?
They stink and they make the whole house, including clothes in the closet ... stink.
BTW, I'm now 71
See #62
LMAO! :D
I’ve got two kats, left over from a failed relationship with a Russian girl. Their names are Masha and Wally, and they will respond to those when called. They do, however, prefer “Masha-Masha-Prostokvashna!!!” “Mashkalushka!”, “Wally-Wally-Hot-Tamale!!!!” and “WallyWalleyeshka”!!! My neighbors all think I’m nuts.
Absolutely, I do. Every one of our cats knows its name.
Having had cats all my life, I knew this long before this study was done. :-)
Good one, sanjuanbob. We had Romeo and Julius for our brother cats.
I checked to see who were charmed by your post enough to reply. None! So I’m replying. That was very...charming :-)
We had five cats a few years ago. I loved them. We have one left. Fortunately my wife is the one who catches the baby rabbits and chimpunks who were taken into the house.
Doesn’t happy too often though.
Sorry your family didn’t scoop the litter box everyday (at least!) or clean up any accidents when they happened. I have 3 cats and you’d never know it.
Had to read that twice..Julius (lol)
My ex-MIL kept a bunch of cats. Their litter boxes
were in the kitchen. There’s nothing like eating
breakfast to the acrid smell of cat piss.
She fed them table scraps. It was hilarious watching
two old tomcats fight over mashed potatoes.
Ping!
So... cats are communists, then? Or just cats who live in coffee houses?
The little bunnies! We had those as well. The local farmer who worked our land one day decided to plow the field to prepare for the crop. Apparently he stirred a nest of mother and babies. Upon arriving home from work, no mother found but two little guys were still there. Placed them inside for protection, intending to keep our small dog as far from them as possible. Sadly, the plan was not a wise one. The dog ended a new bunny life. Rather than continue with that plan, the remaining babe was placed back outside in a natural, protected environment. Who knows his fate; certainly not I. We did have about a dozen rabbits at one time. One had a limp - more than likely came into contact with our local owl. We also had a blind boxer turtle (eye probably sliced by a plow. He was fed cantaloupe and other vegetation, hanging around for a year or so. Then poof, he, too, was gone. Do believe he had another conflict with a farming vehicle.
On the bright side, our new location has rabbits as well. We’ve seen at least two around the house next door. And squirrels. Many, many squirrels due to the abundance of trees. DH fights them and annoys them atrociously. The pecans are HIS and he refuses to share them with any rodent in furs. He’ll get the water hose and use it like a water cannon on them. Also, they are adapt in absconding with the suet from the wire cages. Not that he minds feeding them, but he dislikes the mess they make of things and the loss of suet as it falls from the cage.
Birds: there are a number of song birds here which thrills us to no end. Great morning to awaken to the sweet sounds they create. Actually saw a bluebird. Have yet to spot a painted bunting. Do miss seeing these. And of course, the hummers. Gradually mounting additional feeders as the population increases. We’ve a garden bed filled with Turk’s cap - and they just love this!
The garden was rather neglected this year. Hope to see new plants and blooms this next season. Unusual plants which have never been grown, personally. Oleander, Rose of Sharon, Canna lily in the most unusual color. An apricot with a splash of white on the bloom. Garden will wait until after the house is complete.
At the moment, just tankful we have a/c. It’s HOT here in Texas!
Some things have no basis ...
My Filipina wife (50) has heard of Mickey Mouse and Superman, but has no clue.
I could understand never hearing of Mighty Mouse,
but Mickey Mouse? I thought he was pretty much
worldwide.
Life in the country has many rewards. Sad that the critters are often displaced.
Northeast Georgia is largely country, but we live in a quiet suburban neighborhood with many tall trees. The original builders of the neighborhood were smart to create a meandering road rather than the standard grid.
My DW is a gardener and decided that every new tree planted will be a fruit tree that can both look beautiful and be harvested. We have a fig tree and a few persimmons.
I’m the landscaper who enjoys his push mower and working in the heat of the summer, only to cool down later in the shower and A/C. Yeah, Southern life has its rewards.
Hearing about the Texas BarBQ war in Castro’s district has my mouth watering :- )
I’ve also had cats who meowed when you said their name.
A cute Youtube example:

The cat’s name is Buddy.
