Melting Stone with Plants? Was the mythical 'green chisel' a real tool of the Ancients?

rchaeology is not an exact science. It is full of doubts, uncertainties, surprises, and unanswered questions. One of its unsolved mysteries concerns the methods of ancient stone work, which is lost in the mists of time...

To this technological enigma, excluding fanciful speculations, I intend to offer an explanation in line with ‘ Occam's razor ’: with all factors being equal, the solution to a problem is the simplest one. Using Acid to Work the Hardest Stones

The thesis is that the only practical system available to act on the mentioned minerals, refractory to (or unmanageable by) physical action, was chemistry - specifically exploiting the natural capacity of certain elements to break down other materials due to their incompatibility; incompatible chemical principles put in contact with each other will react by destroying each other. That is, to cause a guided reaction, and to stop it at the right time: the stone would be disintegrated by treating it with a corrosive substance (one incompatible with it) that chemically attacked it, instead of, or before tools were used on it.

Read the entire article and seems credible, though it was never explained how the acid was made. Then at the bottom was this: "New Analysis Proves Most If Not All Bronze Age Iron Came From Space." That blew everything up.

I’ve often wanted to hear a stonemason’s or bricklayer’s opinion on some of the stonework down in Peru. They are made out of huge blocks of granite or something equally hard, no two blocks the same shape, some up to 12 sides, several feet thick, and fit with almost perfect precision. I mean where do you even start a course?? It’s really crazy.

A lot of the stuff in Egypt shows clear evidence of circular saw marks, and core drills, neither of which they were supposed to have. One of the famous 19th century Archeologists, Flinders Petrie (jes’ a good ole boy, you can tell) who discovered some cores estimated the core drills had a feed rate of approximately 1mm per revolution into rose granite. This is impressive by any measure. The large square granite boxes and such weighing from 30 to 100 to tons, many cut from a single piece of stone, with inside 90° cuts and very precise angles when measured modern carpenter tools.

One thing is for sure, they didn’t make all that stuff with coller chisels. The problem is, since modern archaeologists don’t have answers, they don’t talk about it.

Since they don’t talk about it, all the nutjobs do. So there’s really only two competing narratives. Illiterate peasants with copper chisels, or, it was done by outer space aliens from Retucula Zenorh or whatever.

You may have noticed that there are a number of members who are interested in archaeology, ancient history, ancient technology and the intersection of these fields of study.

When a new insight into some of the mysteries of the past is published, we enjoy reading that as news. You probably didn’t waste more that a few minutes of your allotted life span while reading it, but I apologize for taking that from you.

Ever been to Retucula Zenorh? It is a little hot during the summer due to global warming.

This was a very interesting article. I guess you’re not used to reading words with more than four letters (e.g., “BLOG”).

Bronze Age Iron Came From Space.” That blew everything up.

Might they’ve been referring to meteorites?

They’re made of fairly soft volcanic stone formed naturally from compressed ash.

Some North American Indians routinely made elaborate atlatl weights from hard porphery, granite, etc and softer slate by simple pecking and they drilled holes in them using grit and river cane.

What is “they’re” made of?

The one’s I’m talking about are made of granite, an extremely hard, difficult stone to work with. I hesitate to use this website but it popped up at the top of the list, and has good pics. Cuzco, Peru

“From outer space” doesn’t immediately require little green men. Genesis chapter 6 says that fallen angels mated with human females, and their progeny were giant monstrosities up to 20 ft. tall. These not only had superhuman strength, but they had supernatural (fallen) angelic intelligence and wisdom; to cut and fit stonework supernaturally, and to transport ginormous stones great distances, probably by teleportation and other superhuman means.

Perhaps, but only ten percent of meteorites are made of iron. How many would have to be found to have a reliable source of iron?

I think I’ve read that a large meteorite was used by Eskimos as a source of iron. One of the early polar explorers brought back a good-sized piece.

There’s a theory that the Andian Indians used slag from processing copper to get those tight joints that their famous for.

Not those joints.
