Have an old car? You’re not alone. Vehicle age hits record

The average age of cars and trucks in the U.S. has hit a record 11.8 years, as better quality and technology allows people to keep them on the road longer. The 2019 figures from data provider IHS Markit show that the rate of increase is slowing, but the average age is still expected to go over 12 years early in the next decade. The average age is up 0.1 years from 2018. People are feeling comfortable keeping vehicles longer because they’re built better than in the past, said IHS Markit Director of Global Automotive Aftermarket Mark Seng. “The quality is higher, lasting longer, withstanding the weather,” Seng said.

I drive a 1979 Buick station wagon that has over 215,000 miles on it. Last car payment I had was on that car-—Summer of 1984. Bought the car in August of 1981.

I also drive a 1976 Chevy 1 ton dually truck I bought for cash in April 1986. That vehicle has over 348,000 miles on it. It had 90,000 when I bought it. I have towed my horses all over with that truck.

Both still run great & engine rebuilds were done by profession engine builder. Everything is blueprinted & balanced.

No use in trying to get parts at the local auto parts store. I get most of my maintenance & replacement pats from Summit Racing Parts. They NEVER have let me down. New fuel pump for Buick===$22. 4 shocks for Buick ==$86. ETC.

Also- because these 2 vehicles are STEEL, I have “The Law Of Gross Tonnage” in my favor.

I don’t care about the mileage-—registration, insurance & car payments FAR EXCEED my gas purchases.

Since then, I have decided to buy only older cars, starting with a 1956 Studebaker President.

I drove one of those in 1956. Not as whippie as a 327 chevy but respectable. One feature I really liked was a hold on hill brake because I was in San Francisco then, 1956, what a year it was.

[$30-$50K on new trucks]

Heh. I saw a recent ad for a Chevy.

It was $61,000 after they give you the $12,000 discount!

WOW! WHAT A DEAL!

Yes, a $73,000 pickup truck. Wonder if they’ll let me buy TWO?

[and get CASH under the table. They get free everything from local charities and then go state and federal programs- claiming no daddy so getting some type of child support. Nice clothes can be had for almost nothing at our thrift store and they line up with cash on sale days- ROLLS of cash!!!]

We told Americans who were out of work. Yet they still voted for illegal invasion with Democrats.

Which is why a lot of us no longer cared for W. One reason.

Jeb! is your typical Open Borders Republican, too.

I currently operate four vehicles. I had five but my oldest son got married a couple years ago and I signed over my 2001 Mercury Mountaineer to him. It’s approaching 200K miles and starting to show some rust issues and it’s losing oil, though we can’t figure out why. It’s not burning oil and no leaks.

My wife has a 13 Nissan Murano SV with 165K miles on it, it’s her work car, she drives 30 minutes each way and she hopes to get another 125K out of it, although the AC compressor crapped out at 75K miles, $600 to replace.

My daughter is driving an 08 Toyota Highlander Limited with 150K miles on it and it drives like a dream for it’s age. She will graduate college in a couple of years and then it’s going in her name.

I had been driving a 06 Mercury Grand Marquis GS with leather seats and it’s ran like a champ, just turning over 100K miles, but I was having issues getting in and out of it so I gave it to my 16 yr. old son when he got his license and bought me a 15 Nissan crew cab 4X4 frontier SV with 35K miles on it. I figure I will drive it at least 12-15 yrs. or more. I like to get at least a dozen years out of a vehicle.

I bought mine in the nineties for 3 grand. I have offers every day. Easily worth 50k. Rhino lined inside and out. 2 gas tanks, 2 spare tires, chevy 350 with throttle body injection, nv4500 transmissions. I just tore it apart down to the frame last year. No rust anywhere, all new hoses, electrical system all new designed and built by me with everything needed to make the engine run isolated from everything else and virtually indestructable even it the entire rest of the power distribution system is totally destroyed. Everything isolated and fused and breakered . Front windshield goes down by simply pulling 2 latches. never sell..only coming out of my dead fingers.

That’s good to know. One of the reasons I bought it was seeing so many on Craigslist with over 200,000 and asking a grand or so.

Years ago my Brother was with me when I was checking out some Chevy Blazers at a Car Lot.

The Salesman was really pushy so my (smartass) Brother asked him if he wanted to know the difference between the Blazer and the Toyota Land Cruiser.

He proceeds to tell the guy that when you’re off road in the Blazer and you hit a Boulder, that’s it, you’re done. In the Toyota, you just back up and go around it.

The fj is on my Lotto list. Too bad my Brother didn’t keep his. He still owns a 32 five window Deuce coupe though.
He’s had it for 55 Years.

I can’t replace it.

I have bought many cars and trucks over the years, and always spend several thousand dollars bringing the maintenance up to what I want. Brakes, cooling system, bearings, electrical system, upholstery, ANY sensors or electronic parts, etc.

I just do not have the energy or flexibility to do it any more.

This is one that my wife will sell, probably the afternoon of my funeral.

This one is right and always repaired should anything go wrong, plus I have spares for any problem areas.

You do need to be diligent about timing belt replacement. Small price to pay.

Perhaps she'll spring for a Viking funeral, on the lake where your guns were lost...
