Wildlife officials say they were forced to euthanize a friendly young black bear after it grew too familiar with people who regularly fed and took selfies with it.
Since the beginning of June, Oregon police received regular calls about the bear, which was usually spotted near its favorite boat ramp at an Oregon park.
On Thursday, they found the animal surrounded by a pile of trail mix and sunflower seeds that appeared to have been left behind intentionally by some passersby. The police concluded the bear had grown too habituated to human interaction, and could pose a threat to people's safety, so they made the difficult decision to shoot and kill it.

Why not sedate it and move it way, way, back into the wilderness?
Why not sedate it and move it way, way, back into the wilderness?

It would probably never survive. Like turning out a house pet into the wild.
Idiot people did that animal no favors.
Although I don’t agree with what these idiots did, why not send it to a zoo?
‘Nature lovers’ are the first to introduce chaos and imbalance to nature.
I entered a state park where ‘Do not feed wildlife’ signs were posted about every 100 ft. Nevertheless, some of our - ahem - friends from NJ were parked and feeding the deer by hand.
I gave a nice long blast on the car horn as I passed and the deer panicked and scattered. The dirty looks from the feeders were a satisfying reward.
My first thought as well.
When a bear starts taking selfies of itself with people, it’s too much. That bear needs to be put down.
The 100-lb bear was between 2 and 3 years old and could’ve been relocated if it hadn’t grown so accustomed to human contact, Rick Swart of the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife told CNN.
Who knows? It might have started stealing picnic baskets.
That’s one thing, but if it starts referring to them as pic-a-nic baskets...
This is the next Harambe, right here.
It’s a bear. You can’t trust bears.
It’s a good thing the bear didn’t have a name! There would have been protests all over the country!
Just giving a bear a name makes it a person! Explains why babies that are going to be aborted aren’t given names.
I saw that article too, before I saw it here. But I am glad you posted it.
I think it is terrible that they killed this nice, friendly bear.
They should have captured him live, unharmed and taken it to a zoo.
they made the difficult decision to shoot and kill it.
You couldn’t have called someone who could place the lil fella on a preserve or in a zoo?
Fookin idiots...
Probably not surviving is a better outcome that being euthanized.
That said, they probably figured the bear would eventually return.
Recently, a cute little boy in the UK was euthanized over fears he might recover and put further strains on the glorious National Health Scheme:
Socialized medicine: Alfie Evans showed that there is a strict limit to the medical resources available to help you live, but there is no limit to the law enforcement resources available to ensure you dont leave the hospital alive.
That’s a total shame. Idiots who fed it condemned it to death. “A fed bear is a dead bear”. I wish it could have been relocated to a large zoo.
