Let me dumb it down slightly to explain: Imagine you are a manufacturer and you need to build a website. You could go to one of those platforms where you drag and drop some widgets, pages, and solutions on there and type some text, or you could have a whole team of dedicated programmers make a professional website. Traditional automakers are trying to do the former with electric cars and self-driving. They are ordering LEGOs from different companies and hoping they fit together. Where they do not fit, they simply use a knife to carve one LEGO to make it fit the other.

Is Tesla the only automobile company that designs their own chips?
How long will it take the Chinese to reverse engineer and start production?

Likely already doing it. Just ask TESLA how many summer intern Chinese grad students they have working for them.
We don’t know how much of a ‘beast’ it will be till we know the body count.

My bet: Soon China will have the TESLA cloned computers mounted on self driving tanks and other armored vehicles.
Robotically driven so the soldiers aboard can focus on weapons and targeting.
The Daystrom M-5 Multitronic System...move along, nothing to see here.

Hey Hal, take me to Bob’s Discount Liquors on Main street.
Dave, that is not allowed by your medical officer...
I am all in if Valkryie can cook Chicken Almond Gai Ding! ( sarc.)
Author admits he illiterate with respect to embedded MCU systems, then proceeds to prove it by putting his ignorance on full display. This article is like the average home handyman at Lowes trying to explain how Trump Tower was designed and built.
So, is Tesla the only one out there that does this work in house?
Doesn’t sound like they just call the UAW for a couple of dozen embedded engineers?
Guessing this requires a very long lead time and a learning curve from hell?
Is that what causes those spectacular fires I see articles about?
Huge marketing problem for Tesla. Most consumers, unless coerced, prefer the range, durability, convenience and the all terrain, all weather reliability of the internal combustion engine rather than electric vehicles. Also most prefer to do their own driving. While there is a niche market for Tesla’s gadget loaded electric vehicles, it is not big enough to generate the sales necessary to create a profit off the enormous amount of capital that was spent to research and manufacture these cars. Tesla will go bankrupt unless the Democrats come to power, implement their “green new deal” and force consumers to buy electric vehicles.
I’m curious how these work when it’s snowing.
At night.
With a significant wind.
In construction zones.
With large 18 wheelers thither and about.
Etc.
Or you could hire me and my excellent graphic designer.

Meanwhile as people are forced to buy an electric car (with Tesla the preferred brand), charging stations will be open on alternate weeks with home stations limited to alternate week trickle charge only.
The upshot is that most roads and highways will be mostly empty with the occasional electric truck and limo on one lane - with all other lanes opened for bicycles and rickshaws.
The rolling blackouts and brown outs will be strictly managed and include severe penelties for power theft.
You're on the right track. Tesla clearly is NOT the only one doing this. Though based on the body count of Tesla drivers killed by the "auto-pilot" mode, they're the only one selling it before all the bugs are worked out.
I have a couple of plain old basic GM cars. I have "steering assist" to stay in lane, and "adaptive cruise control" to maintain speed, distance, and appropriate braking. The cars bark at me (buzz the seat, flash red lights on the window, and squawk loudly) when things aren't going right. This all makes the cars safer and adds to my peace of mind. That's a long way from auto-pilot, and I'm happy to bide my time.
I purchased a Model S with this chip. It drives itself better than about half the people on the road. It slows itself down for sharp curves etc. Changes lanes flawlessly. The car accurately manages and knows your energy needs. Simply tell the car where you are going and it will tell you where to stop for a Supercharger along the way. It is really the only electric car you can take a road trip in(the rest either charge slowly or do not have access to a network of superchargers)
He is years ahead of Mercedes,BMW and Audi.
It appears Musk does not let people tell him you can’t do that.

...
With software updates, it will get much better.
Musk claims that full self driving is only a year or two away.
I prefer to take my chances with the other half.
