What three historical people do you wish lived longer?

Posted on 05/27/2019 3:20:24 PM PDT by MNDude

There are thousands of people who have made the world a better place to live. Many died before they were old and some would might be great to have around for a lot longer.

Which three historic people do you wish could have lived another 30 years?

Thomas Edison? Rod Sterling? Shakespeare? John Paul II? You get the point.

My answer would be very complicated. I know a lot of conservatives don’t like him, but he had a wonderful love for life, which is not exactly condemned in the Bible. His politics were not mine, but that was only a minor character flaw in my opinion. If we’re going to crucify each other for our flaws, then we’d all be crucified.

He was a self-conceited ass.

When I was there, he taught a course actually open to the general undergrad population in theory.

Except he only had one TA and so decided to cap enrolment at 50—and if you wanted in you needed to interview for a slot.

He who does not work should not eat.

Good thread. A lot of thought put into many of the answers and responses. Thanks.

He had two lives: one public, one private. I can’t judge both.

I don’t know if his attitude towards the hoi poloi of undergrad students counts as public or private in your book, but in my book that leaves the options of an ass through and through, duplicitous, or a moron.

I don’t say slavery WAS going anywhere I said that slavery COULD flourish somewhere where there wasn’t tobacco or cotton. you seem indirectly deny this simple obvious point.

*HOW* was it going to "flourish"? What were they going to get a slave to do in New Mexico to make them a lot of money? What were they going to get a slave to do in Arizona to make them a lot of money? Colorado? Oklahoma?

You say "mining" and sheep ranching or something. And you think this would make them more money then growing cotton in Mississippi? And how many would there be? Hundreds of Thousands as in Mississippi, or some other Southern states? Like I said, in all of New Mexico Territory, there was hardly any slaves.

The status of slavery during the territorial period provoked considerable debate. The granting of statehood was up to a Congress sharply divided on the slavery issue. Some (including Stephen A. Douglas) maintained that the territory could not restrict slavery, as under the earlier Missouri Compromise, while others (including Abraham Lincoln) insisted that older Mexican Republic legal traditions of the territory, which abolished black, but not Indian, slavery in 1834, took precedence and should be continued. Regardless of its official status, slavery was rare in antebellum New Mexico, Black slaves never numbered more than about a dozen.[1]

If you admit the error of your original statement about tobacco and cotton, I may respond to your next reply. Otherwise, good night.

I am not wrong. Slavery was going no where outside the places it already existed.

I don’t know what his number of TA has to do with anything. I didn’t know him personally. I’ve had to reason to hate him so far.

If you are capping enrolment at 50, you have no reason to have a TA if you are a normally competent prof. You only need a TA if actual marking and meeting with students is infra dig

It’s like refusing to work more than 24 hours a week at a burger joint because you’re only got one slave to help you out.

Oh I see. So that’s it? I’ve heard others complaining about his womanizing, or his atheism, or his belief in evolution more.

Percy Dovetonsils. He’d be lynched today. Great stuff. Kovacs was a genius, and absolutely out of his mind. Loved him.
