Smarter people listen to instrumental music: study

here seems to be an air of pretension among aficionados of jazz and classical music, psychological research is giving them good reason.

A new study published in Evolutionary Behavioral Sciences suggests that those who prefer instrumental music tend to be more intelligent.

Study author Elena Racevska, a PhD student at Oxford Brookes University, became interested in how musical preference is tied to personality traits as she learned about the Savanna-IQ Interaction Hypothesis, which presumes that more intelligent individuals seek more novel experiences compared to less intelligent people.

“After reading Kanazawa’s papers, one of which was on the relationship between intelligence and musical preferences, we decided to further test his hypothesis using a different set of predictors — namely, a different type of intelligence test (i.e. a nonverbal measure), and the uses of music questionnaire,” says Racevska. “We also measured a number of variables likely to have an effect in this relationship, such as taking part in extra-curricular music education, its type and duration.”

I usually don't care for these "studies" but I like this one, cause it says I'm smart.

Vocal pieces aren’t necessarily bad. A Bach cantata, a Schubert mass, or lieder by Schubert, Schumann or Brahms are among my favorites.

I’m listening to volume 1 of the music of Quinn Martin shows.

All instrumental. I prefer instrumental music most of the time anyway.

“This is the cereal that’s shot from guns. [BOOM!]”

That was mid 1960’s. Today the Coalition Against Gun Violence would be suing the pants off Quaker Oats Co and Camera Hogg & Emma Shavehead would be chaining themselves to the corporate HQ doors. Dianne Feinstein would be calling for a nationwide boycott of all Quaker Oats products while demanding the confiscation of all privately owned Q.O. cereal boxes.

Kellogg’s had gun toting Sugar Pops Pete in TV ads. Wild Bill Hickok & Jingles wielded six shooters on their cereal boxes.

That’s all gone. Now, isn’t America a much safer place?

As one of my kids noted, almost all jazz concerts are free because no one wants to pay for ear mush.

LOL! Completely inaccurate but a bit silly, nonetheless...

As an entrepreneur who works from home, I normally have our local classical station on in the background but also inject our local jazz station. Obviously, jazz CDs are also played throughout the day.

btw, my entrepreneurial activities involves the US marketing of ultra high-end audio equipment from Europe and the Far East.

As an aside, I earned an MBA with national honors (top 1%) from a business school that was a part of the 25% of US accredited business schools

The voice is a beautiful and the ultimate melodic instrument. There isn’t an instrument made by man that can compare to the capability of variety and depth of expressions of the human voice. Words can distract from the performance and some of my favorite compositions are performed in languages I don’t speak. On the other hand who doesn’t enjoy a band playing a Sousa John Philip march like Stars and Stripes Forever or Sempre Fidelis

... Polish, I just really like how the language sounds.

A "Pollock" friend of mine told me this joke.

A Pollock goes to the eye doctor for an examination. On the screen the doctor put UP, CZKUCHA and asked the Pollock if he could read any of the letters. The Pollock answered, "Read them? I know the guy"!
