Germany, one of the worlds biggest consumers of coal, will shut down all 84 of its coal-fired power plants over the next 19 years to meet its international commitments in the fight against climate change, a government commission said Saturday.
The announcement marked a significant shift for Europes largest country a nation that had long been a leader on cutting CO2 emissions before turning into a laggard in recent years and badly missing its reduction targets. Coal plants account for 40% of Germanys electricity, itself a reduction from recent years when coal dominated power production.
This is an historic accomplishment, said Ronald Pofalla, chairman of the 28-member government commission, at a news conference in Berlin following a marathon 21-hour negotiating session that concluded at 6 a.m. Saturday. The breakthrough ended seven months of wrangling. It was anything but a sure thing. But we did it, Pofalla said. There wont be any more coal-burning plants in Germany by 2038.
The plan includes some $45 billion in spending to mitigate the pain in coal regions. The commissions recommendations are expected to be adopted by Chancellor Angela Merkels government.
Its a big moment for climate policy in Germany that could make the country a leader once again in fighting climate change, said Claudia Kemfert, professor for energy economics at the DIW Berlin, the German Institute for Economic Research. Its also an important signal for the world that Germany is again getting serious about climate change: a very big industrial nation that depends so much on coal is switching it off.
The decision to quit coal follows an earlier bold energy policy move by the German government, which decided to shut down all of its nuclear power plants by 2022 in the wake of Japans Fukushima disaster in 2011.

Brown Shirts to Brown Outs.
Fools. More land devoted to unreliable energy. They are “destroying Germany in order to save it.” Fools, stupid fools chasing a false premise.
Grab the corner on candles.
Well, lets see... No coal... No nukes... since the sun rarely shines in Germany, solar is not an option. All ya got left is tidal, hydro and wind.
Obviously the loss of tens of thousands of coal related jobs
means nothing, guess they can all go to making and installing
solar panels.
Let’s get real. This only works if by “renewable” they mean the gas that keeps flowing out of those pipelines from Russia.
There is zero chance wind or solar will come anywhere close to meeting their needs. No nuclear and now no coal means natural gas or oil are the only alternatives to fuel their power plants.
Like installing the oil filter with 24 bolts that have to be removed from the inside...(maybe not quite that bad)
Back to pre-industrial society. Well, that’s one islamist regime that won’t give us too many problems.
“... 4.7 million Muslims in Germany that dont give a flip about international commitments in the fight against climate change
They aren’t alone.
Apparently they are still punishing themselves.
It is already too late to avoid mass starvation,

Let’s send AOC to Germany to show them how it’s done! LOL!!
They has The Dumbs.
Maybe they can build an air fleet of replica B-17s and Avro Lancasters to bomb themselves into submission again...
Because this lunacy has worked ever so well in NYS...
SNORT.
Every eighty years or so, the germans go completely insane.

Excerpts:
“Over the last decade France has exported up to 70 TWh net each year. In 2016 they were principally to Italy, the UK, Spain, Germany and Switzerland. France has 58 nuclear reactors operated by EDF, with a total capacity of 63.1 GWe.”
“In mid-2010 a regular energy review of France by the International Energy Agency urged the country increasingly to take a strategic role as provider of low-cost, low-carbon base-load power for the whole of Europe rather than to concentrate on the energy independence which had driven policy since 1973.”
I’m glad that France is smart enough (!!) to have a lot of nuclear energy. The article indicates that they are building more. (Many of them are near their border!)
I thought they had sworn off the stupid. I was obviously wrong.
Exactly! We just need to stall long enough. I knew some of the Yurps - most likely the Germans or Swedes - would actually take the plunge and serve as an example to the rest of the world how disastrous Gaia Worship is once carried to its logical extreme.
They’re going to have really expensive energy. They will make themselves totally dependent on Russia’s gas and Russia will just squeeze them for whatever cash they have left after wasting so much on “green” energy and of course millions of imported muslims who don’t work and live on the public dole.
