Electric cars DO have a smaller carbon footprint overall, says Volkswagen
Motoring Research ^ | 4/25/19 | John Redfern

Volkswagen has crunched the numbers to show electric cars produce lower CO2 emissions than petrol- or diesel-engined models, for the entire lifespan of the vehicle.

While it may be clear that an electric car produces no direct CO2 emissions when driving, Volkswagen has demonstrated the wider savings through use of a ‘certified life cycle assessment’ process.

The company has taken the all-electric e-Golf, and the traditional diesel-engined Golf TDI, to demonstrate just how substantial the differences can be over the whole life of a car.

“One of them rode on it actually. “

You wouldn’t let him ride in it?

Key phrase "when driving" it has a smaller carbon foot print.
Typical salesman. This car gets great gas mileage "down hill"

No they don’t. 90% or more of electricity is wasted before it reaches its point of use.

“Key phrase “when driving” it has a smaller carbon foot print. “

Typical anti-technology dude. Excerpt and change reference to mislead thinking that most will never go back to check the actual words. Sort of like Biden does to Trump’s statements. Here is the actual statement:

“While it may be clear that an electric car produces no direct CO2 emissions when driving, Volkswagen has demonstrated the wider savings through use of a ‘certified life cycle assessment’ process.”

ROTFLMAO at the stuff that is made up here!

6% not 90%.

To be clear. Are you defending them here?

“To be clear. ...”

To be clear, I am pointing out how you performed a selective excerpt and added your words instead of the author’s words in an attempt to mislead the readers knowing that most are too lazy to go back and read the real statement.

No. That is an excerpt. You are good at excerpting.

“That’s not a study, that’s a cherry-picked summary of some peeps studying something”

By any chance was Michael Mann one of them, did he offer up his hockey stick graph as evidence?

The linked VW study barely mentions the current (so to speak) CO2 budget for EVs, but rather focuses on what it could be, with future technology. Future technology may, or may not, come to pass. In addition, the study seems to assume that EVs will have the same driving profile as IC powered vehicles. Today, that's impossible, and there is no future technology, even on the horizon, that would make that possible.

There is no future technology foreseen that makes EVs as versatile for vehicle usage that includes all the kinds of driving that IC engines provide today. That means that EVs will be only niche vehicles for the foreseeable future. many people will own, or rent, extra IC vehicles for the things that EVs can't provide. The carbon budget for these vehicles was not included in this study.

"Outruns your souped up Viper!"

Outruns??? It MAY have a better zero to 60 time. That is, of course, if you don't use the heater, AC, headlights, the battery is fully charged, there's no one else in the EV, it's warm outside, and the moon just set. In REAL driving, the EV is a slug. I'll take any of my IC cars, any day, in the kind of driving I do. I'll pass your EV sitting along side the road on a 100 degree day with the windows up because there isn't even enough battery charge to lower them, waiting for someone to come along with a generator that will take 10 hours to charge your battery. That is, if you're in range of a cell tower to call for the mobile charging service.

I would say that 2.2 seconds IS a better time!

I call it good at pin pointing the issue. Which in this case is CO2 which isn’t a problem for anyone other then global alarmist.

"I would say that 2.2 seconds IS a better time!"

It certainly is. You must have totally missed my point that it was measured under circumstances not achievable in the real world.

Also, they didn’t add in the carbon footprint for the airplanes used for things the EV’s can’t provide.

Reaching a finding doesn’t mean they are making money pushing said thing, which is what you said.
