That is a very good question. Remember during the war in Syria we told Russia to stand down and they were NO WHERE around the bombing. The Syrian soldiers were FURIOUS! But Russia made sure they weren't near so their planes wouldn't engage by mistake. We also found out that Israel often told Russia where they were going to be. I think we can safely say Russia does the same.
