Vanity: Librarian Laments “Whiteness” of Our Cultural Heritage

Posted on 04/17/2019 7:53:29 AM PDT by TigerClaws

Posting this as a vanity in hope it’ll be picked up by the conservative media that hunts here for stories.

The library journal posted this on twitter.

Links to a librarian who posted this:

If you look at any United States library’s collection, especially those in higher education institutions, most of the collections (books, journals, archival papers, other media, etc.) are written by white dudes writing about white ideas, white things, or ideas, people, and things they stole from POC and then claimed as white property with all of the “rights to use and enjoyment of” that Harris describes in her article. When most of our collections filled with this so-called “knowledge,” it continues to validate only white voices and perspectives and erases the voices of people of color. Collections are representations of what librarians (or faculty) deem to be authoritative knowledge and as we know, this field and educational institutions, historically, and currently, have been sites of whiteness.

Library collections continue to promote and proliferate whiteness with their very existence and the fact that they are physically taking up space in our libraries. They are paid for using money that was usually ill-gotten and at the cost of black and brown lives via the prison industrial complex, the spoils of war, etc. Libraries filled with mostly white collections indicates that we don’t care about what POC think, we don’t care to hear from POC themselves, we don’t consider POC to be scholars, we don’t think POC are as valuable, knowledgeable, or as important as white people. To return to the Harris quote from above, library collections and spaces have historically kept out Black, Indigenous, People of Color as they were meant to do and continue to do. One only has to look at the most recent incident at the library of my alma mater, Barnard College, where several security guards tried to kick out a Black Columbia student for being Black.

I still have some thinking to do around this topic, but curious to hear what others think. I’m less interested in hearing that you don’t buy it, so don’t bother with those types of comments.

A couple of decades, not only did the local liberal book stores fail to carry books by conservatives.

Our library was very liberal and zero books written by Thomas Sowell, Rush Limbaugh, Ronald Reagan and other conservative writers were on the shelves.

In fact the head librarian refused to accept free and new Dr. Sowell books.

Our personal lawyer was/is an old fashioned Democrat.

I informed him of the situation, and at first he tried shrug it off.

Then, I told him that I was going to sue the library for racist actions by refusing to accept some new books by Dr. Sowell.

He took my books and delivered them in person to the head librarian. He told her, that he would be back in a few hours to see if they had been processed and on the shelf.

He reminded them, that his office was across the street about 100 yards long. That, he often browsed the Library to see what was new.

Tom’s books were on the non fiction shelf, which, he saw while on his next noon walk and visit to the library.

There is none of this left wing bs now at the library.

I turned down 2 offers to be on their board. I recommended one of our friends, and she finishing her 2nd term as a board member.

So one doesn’t have burn books if they are liberals and own bookstores or as a head librarian. Just keep them off the shelves.

I think it is both possible and right to credit people, no matter their race, creed, or sex, with any creation that sprung forth from their brain, while at the same time understanding that the majority of inventions up to the end of the 20th century were white males.

Not all of the, but the majority of them. I don’t think that is being racist or sexist to acknowledge that.

The fact that someone doesn’t get recognition for inventing a railroad coupler, algorithm for frequency hopping, lawn sprinkler or ice cream scooper has less to do with the color of their skin or their gender, and has more to do with the fact that most inventors toil in obscurity, even for things that are a real convenience or improvement.

If you invent a vaccine to prevent a terrible disease the kills, cripples, or consigns people to an iron lung for the rest of their lives, people are going to remember your name is Jonas Salk. If you create an algorithm that modern cell phone technology uses on every phone call (Frequency hopping) people aren’t going to remember your name is Hedy Lamaar and that you were a woman because people are going to remember who created the phone many of them use, and that his name was Steve Jobs.

People want to make everything out to be sexism or racism. As Freud once said, “Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar”.

Remember this the next time some idiots babbles on about “white nationalism” or “white supremacy.” What they *literally* mean is our Western heritage.

I know someone would say things like “The wheel was invented by a non-white Arab!” to the rolling of my eyes.

“maybe the Librarian should live up to her words by going for 48 hours without Using or Possessing ANY Item or Product Invented or Popularized by a White Male.”

You mean, like books and stuff?

How about cars, clothing made with a sewing machine, computers, telephones, the internet, etc.

I think you would quickly be reduced to mud huts and loincloths.

From that poem, one can deduce:
1. She’s another liberal psychopath.
2. She shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near weapons.
3. She shouldn’t be allowed near children or white people.
4. All of the above.

She is at the very least a bad poet, at worst, that and all the above!

To make it worse, the website that had the text of the poem had an ling to an AV file you could play to hear it, so I thought that might be interesting, but...

It was one of those computer-speak things! For all I know, depending on the cadence or rythm used by the reader, it might have been interesting, but...no!

I would rather stick sharpened pencils in each ear than to hear computer-speak renditions of her poetry!

Just another way of saying that White males have made the innovations that allowed humankind to thrive in organized societies.

But, hey, maybe it’s time to put an end to organized societies. Stone caves can be comfortable, too, and tribal warfare can be quite exciting.

People who denigrate the source of technology they wouldn’t survive without are like the Luddite cranks who smear science while soaking in its benefits. Poltroons all.

Let’s get the “librarian” really cranked up and hope the librarian’s head explodes:

White people have advanced civilization for the good of all for the past 2,000 years and will continue to advance civilization for the next 2,000 years.

It all reminds me of the Forbidden Zone in the original Planet of the Apes where no one is permitted to go, lest they discover evidence of men who talked and a life that predated the apes in society.

I’d imagine her “poetry” could be summed up as follows:

“Men... Uggg...
I’d rather eat... a Bug...
I see one on the street...
I think of ...socks, and... “Old Smelly Feet...”
Men... Uggg...”

That’s about it.

Hahahahahaha...

If they ever have one of those literary contests like the one where you have to write something in the style of Ernest Hemingway...you’re gonna win if she is the subject.
