If you look at any United States librarys collection, especially those in higher education institutions, most of the collections (books, journals, archival papers, other media, etc.) are written by white dudes writing about white ideas, white things, or ideas, people, and things they stole from POC and then claimed as white property with all of the rights to use and enjoyment of that Harris describes in her article. When most of our collections filled with this so-called knowledge, it continues to validate only white voices and perspectives and erases the voices of people of color. Collections are representations of what librarians (or faculty) deem to be authoritative knowledge and as we know, this field and educational institutions, historically, and currently, have been sites of whiteness.
Library collections continue to promote and proliferate whiteness with their very existence and the fact that they are physically taking up space in our libraries. They are paid for using money that was usually ill-gotten and at the cost of black and brown lives via the prison industrial complex, the spoils of war, etc. Libraries filled with mostly white collections indicates that we dont care about what POC think, we dont care to hear from POC themselves, we dont consider POC to be scholars, we dont think POC are as valuable, knowledgeable, or as important as white people. To return to the Harris quote from above, library collections and spaces have historically kept out Black, Indigenous, People of Color as they were meant to do and continue to do. One only has to look at the most recent incident at the library of my alma mater, Barnard College, where several security guards tried to kick out a Black Columbia student for being Black.
I still have some thinking to do around this topic, but curious to hear what others think. Im less interested in hearing that you dont buy it, so dont bother with those types of comments.
Problem solved!
Civil society “laments” that this racist nitwit is a librarian.
maybe the Librarian should live up to her words by going for 48 hours without Using or Possessing ANY Item or Product Invented or Popularized by a White Male.
Well, most of our cultural heritage was created and recorded before minorities were educated and publishing, so there you have it.
As Maya Angelou’s dreck is touted as the best America can do, (she is a black woman), then I expect the resulting libraries to finally become the suppository of American knowledge. The internet will be the repository.
This is or was a white majority country via white European immigration. The country’s roots are not in Africa or Asia. It is no surprise that most and nearly all of the great things our country has accomplished were done by people of white European descent. There is nothing racist or biased or bigoted in this observation. It is a shame that people have forgotten, never learned, or deny our history. Villifying what makes America great, what we’ve accomplished, will destroy the country.
You mean I can’t say “I don’t buy it” because the great majority of contributions to culture and science in the West came from people NOT classified as “POC”?
Simply sounds like a typical case of a Leftist Librarian to me, and there are plenty of them.
I think the librarians insecurities are showing. Envy is the root of such bitterness
Well, there’s always peanut butter.
Democrats are scum.
I just had to go read one of her poems:
****************************
MEN
When I was young, I used to
Watch behind the curtains
As men walked up and down the street. Wino men, old men.
Young men sharp as mustard.
See them. Men are always
Going somewhere.
They knew I was there. Fifteen
Years old and starving for them.
Under my window, they would pauses,
Their shoulders high like the
Breasts of a young girl,
Jacket tails slapping over
Those behinds,
Men.
One day they hold you in the
Palms of their hands, gentle, as if you
Were the last raw egg in the world. Then
They tighten up. Just a little. The
First squeeze is nice. A quick hug.
Soft into your defenselessness. A little
More. The hurt begins. Wrench out a
Smile that slides around the fear. When the
Air disappears,
Your mind pops, exploding fiercely, briefly,
Like the head of a kitchen match. Shattered.
It is your juice
That runs down their legs. Staining their shoes.
When the earth rights itself again,
And taste tries to return to the tongue,
Your body has slammed shut. Forever.
No keys exist.
Then the window draws full upon
Your mind. There, just beyond
The sway of curtains, men walk.
Knowing something.
Going someplace.
But this time, I will simply
Stand and watch.
Maybe.

Boy. Sucks to have been her. Filled with hate and disgust and to write poetry about THAT. Kind of comparable to rap music when compared to gospel.
And the pompous leftist elites would read this, stroke their chins and mutter “Deep! Deep!”
Comparing her stuff to e e cummings. or even Dorothy Parker, Angelou comes off, the ultimate crime, as uninteresting.
My wife is Collections Manager at a large public library and is staunchly opposed to any kind of censorship. Dedicated to presenting all viewpoints.

But that doesn’t include all the things that white males ripped off from people of color.
/s
I remember forty eight years ago when some radio stations often carried an information ad, that told of some great invention used every day, and it always ended with the name of the person who invented it, and the words,”..A black man.”
I can’t remember any of the inventions today.
How about a 22 ounce can of Colt 45?
ummm, ok. I love libraries, but our local one has turned into a VFW, very few whites.
Culture is not White. The background of this text box is white. The word White is used artificially to designate a fictitious group of people who are deemed to have a skin color the same as this background. It is not the same shade. It is way different.
Creating an artificial group, and then directing one’s hate toward all the “members” of that group is a sign of mental instability. Assuming that all “members” share the same personality characteristics is insanity. Talking about the “whiteness” of culture reveals a person who is mentally incompetent and who should not be working at a library, but instead scrubbing floors.
“maybe the Librarian should live up to her words by going for 48 hours without Using or Possessing ANY Item or Product Invented or Popularized by a White Male.”
You mean, like books and stuff?
