Your favorite "Life Hacks" you can recommend.

Posted on 03/23/2019 8:49:44 AM PDT by MNDude

A "life hack" phrase that describe any hacks, tips and tricks that get things done quickly by automating, increase productivity and organizing (formerly called a "good ideas."

Examples: putting soap and water in a blender and turn it on to clean it. Heating a cup of water in the microwave to loosen the food. Using a shoe as a cupholder. (Millions of things you can do with duct tape).

I believe the older generation probably had many of these, particularly for home remedies.

Which "life hacks" can you recommend?

I don’t understand how you can go opposite and not shave your arm

Suppose you wanted to shave your forearm. You might put the razor near your shoulder and stroke it down to your elbow.

You just shaved a strip of your arm.

Now, with the razor still at your elbow, in contact with your skin and still in the same orientation, stroke it back up your arm. That’s the strop move. It burnishes the blades in the cartridge without shaving anything. Give it nine more strops and you’re done.

After a few shaves, you’ll feel the razor pull a little, as all blades will. Restrop it. I’ve been using the same cartridge for months.

Helpful hint....

For resealing opened potato chip type bags:
Remove some air and roll bag only partway down.
Flatten roll and put short fold near each end.
(many people stop here)
Tuck the folded roll inside the rest of the bag so it will not unfold/unroll.
If you leave just enough air in the bag to make it puffy when tucked it will reduce breakage
For potato chips this might require cleaning hands to get enough grip on the plastic to tuck it inside.
For bags in boxes (crackers) just make big folds and the box will do the rest.
Repurpose your ‘chip clips’ if you have them.

LOL!

Long ago, I saw a couple of rather strange looking people wearing pyramid hats just like that one, but smaller. The hats were made of copper, and had crystals danging from the apexes.

I think they were space aliens.

For colds, blahs or sickness cut up half a grapefruit in quarters. Put it in a blender, rind, seeds and all. Fill it with water and puree it. Drink 8 oz. morning and night for 3 days and you’ll be over it.

Take the other half of the grapefruit and puree it but use as little water as possible. Put it in a bowl and store in the fridge to dry out. Use the paste it as a first aide on cuts, burns, infections and rashes.

Rosemary is a potent antioxidant. It was used in K Rations in WWII as a preservative.

Well, you could take up BDSM and use it as a whipping post.

[It’s only stupid for those who are too young to have lived through the Great Depression.]

I have learned people throw out stuff all the time. It’s only a $1 they say. I re-purpose or use everything to the max.

Now, I’m not talking garbage, that is (i.e. food containers, rinds). But I DO use stuff to compost in the garden. I like to keep putting stuff down before it snows and let the snow melt and work it into the ground - same with rain.

Soil looks dark and healthy. More so than the other ground nearby not treated like that. This year it’s going to be onions or flowers. Haven’t decided. Flowers are considered to put down roots and help keep the soil. I hope that works, anyways.

I may put the onions in pots (big ones). This time I will not plant so many. They are hardy little suckers. Last year, planted the pots and then it snowed AND froze twice. Look out there one day and they are growing like weeds. The tops were 2-3 feet long before you knew it.

Wal*Mart - bag of bulbs $3 right now - I try to get a lot of red onions but there is a mix of yellow, white and red. The very small bulbs don’t do much but the ones that are about 1/2 the size of a golf ball do really well. I used rainwater, city water (most of the time because of little rain), some Miracle Gro I’ve had for years and this year I have some Epsom Salt to add. I’ll put down just a little for each, hopefully.

You probably don't want to yell, "Ah'm A Blue Aardvark!!!" on the plane, if you want a nice, peaceful, uneventful trip.

If you get those annoying, tiny gnats in your kitchen from exposed fruit just pour Mountain Dew half way full in a highball glass. In the morning they will all be in it, dead (citrus smell attracts, high sugar fluid sticks and drowns em).

Mineral spirits kills cat urine smell.

Silver polish removes many car paint scratches. Just keep working it.

Use “Frog lube paste” (for guns) on all of your tools, chisels, and cast metal surfaces (like your planer) to prevent rust. Just work it, polish it in with a rag. I discovered this on accident, but it even fights south Georgia humidity. Much better than wax or silicon.

Mix 1/3 turpentine, 1/3 boiled linseed oil, 1/3 pure tung oil. You now have the greatest wood finishing oil known to man. Resists water and oil, and wood glue wont stick to it. Looks beautiful. Slop it on with a rag, work it in the direction of the grain, wait a minute, then wipe off excess. Do three coats, minimum. Best on work benches. Smells like heaven.

after finishing cooking with a skillet, frying pan, wok, or the like, wipe most of the oil/fat out with a paper towel, and then heat about a cup of water in the pan with a bit of liquid soap to boiling and scrub pan with a brush ... complete the cleaning by spraying pan clean in the sink ... makes cleaning pans a real snap ...

That’s impressive. A lot of practice went into that.

I’ll bet he’s missed before. The crazy thing is there are a lot of machines that do an impressive job these days. Kitchen gadgets I mean. I’ve used several. Home kitchen I mean. Still, wow.

“Stainless rod tumblers for brass cleaning.”

I use a rock tumbler with the stainless rods plus a bit of soap and lots of citric acid with hot water ... does an amazing cleaning jobs and the citric acid leaves a tarnish-resistant surface on the brass ...
