I-SPY I thought I was paranoid but now I’m 100% sure our phones are listening to us(trunc)

HAVE you ever been talking about a pair of trainers or holiday destination, and then suddenly seen an advert for that precise thing pop up on social media?

Us too. As incredible as it sounds, it might be because our phones are secretly spying on us.

It's a question I've been asking for a while after seeing adverts for things I've been talking about - but not searching - popping up on my phone.

While we are all used to targeted ads - seeing pictures of things we've just searched for appearing in ad spaces on the websites we visit after - many people think advertisers and phone companies are taking this one step further.

If voice recognition apps like Siri and Bixby are always listening for commands, is it really beyond the realm of possibility that they are also sending ads our way based on what we're talking about?

While tech giants including Facebook and Apple vehemently deny they are using phones to listen into customers' conversations and then sell the data onto advertisers, I wasn't so sure I believed them.

Yeah. Even minored in English in college. It’s the damn phone autocorrect and my reckless break neck speed.

But remember what Andrew Jackson said: ‘

“It is a damn poor mind indeed which can’t think of at least two ways to spell any word.’’

Powering off a phone does not turn it off. Completely correct.

Consumers FUELED the police state by buying the implements of their own surveillance.

“You only THINK its off. It's still.....listening...”

That's why, when I'm not using it, I always keep my phone in a plywood box into which I pipe Yanni’s Greatest Hits.

I have an Alcatel flip phone and it does everything I need.

Can you use a map feature in that phone while driving?

Haven't you noticed our television and the seemingly endless commercials advertising Yanni?

Yup. Nearly all the cabbies in Washington DC are Somali. I asked the one American cabbie we had if any of his fares discussed classified info in the back seat while he was driving. ‘Most of them’ he said.

I attended a Pentecostal church with on-fire preaching and lots, I mean LOTS of high-energy praise and worship.

I can tell ya that most people wouldn’t have been able to stay in there 30 seconds, LOL. It was often 2 hours or so. Some days, nearly an hour of the praise and worship.

It had an amazing ability to regenerate you. (or not so amazing, that is)

I laugh thinking about somebody walking in there and not prepared for THAT. LOL

He said his phone does all he needs

For me, the phone ap on my hand held computer is perhaps the least used capability. An I phone is a computer with a phone ap

In terms of usage by time, the WAZE GPS and music aps are the most used. The GPS keeps me on course and navigates in unknown territory while listening to audio books.

Since I am not involved with nefarious activity, I do not fear listening in

“If you want actual privacy turn off the phone and put it in the freezer or microwave while you talk”

For extra privacy, wrap it in tin foil and put it in the microwave. For extra extra privacy, wrap it in tin foil, put it in the microwave, and turn the microwave on.

On the NY Thruway I used my husband’s iPhone to enter “do you need...” and it filled in “a passport to enter Canada” which is exactly what we had been talking about.

Maybe that is the most common question on the Thruway north.

I carry a dumb phone myself.

due to Federal rule the phones remain receiving data even when turned off.

Put it in the microwave or a metal pot. My brother has made a sheet metal case for his so he can still use it for music. Matches the foil hat. :)

Why get one in the first place?

Stay as far away FRom Google, Facebook and Twitter as you can! Those companies are doing great harm to America, and, AFAIAC, could disappear in a cloud of smoke right now! We’d all be much better off!
