Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A nutrient once thought to be healthy if eaten in abundance may actually cut life short, a new study says.
A low-protein, high-carbohydrate diet has been linked to living longer and maintaining brain health, according to a study published this month in Current Biology.
Eating too much protein, Proud says, can speed up protein synthesis, which quickly causes a build-up of "faulty protein" -- leading to a likelihood of early death. The researchers tested this theory by feeding high protein diets to fruit flies and worms.
"Since this link also operates in humans, our findings show how lower protein consumption could promote longevity in people," Proud said.
However, Proud not only recommends eating less protein but also more carbohydrates, which many have long-associated with an unhealthy diet.
"Carbohydrates get a lot of bad press, especially in relation to dieting, but the key is balance and knowing the difference between 'good' carbs and 'bad' carbs," Proud said.

I apologize for giving that impression. I really do not have any animus against him... I got carried away bickering with those who came after me in this thread that I started.
I also agree with your assessment of what the typical American diet has devolved into. What most people stuff in their faces couldn't be much worse, so for many following the Atkins diet may even be a bit of an improvement. Unfortunately I have known quite a few older folks who have had health problems and some who have died after sticking with a high protein low carb diet plan. Would they have gotten sick and died anyway... maybe. But their spouses felt that their diet was at least partially responsible
Obesity was a problem for many people I worked with on the fire department as they got older. I know of virtually none who had long term success with Atkins style dieting. The ones who were successful got counseling on both their diet and their life style and stuck with programs set up for them.
My wife is a nurse and taught nutrition and exercise classes for many years. She was in charge of “fat boy” programs for both the Air Force and the Army. She also worked with civilians and ran a successful gym for several years as well. She also worked with the elderly. When we were out in public people used to come up to her all the time and thank her for helping and inspiring them to change their lives. And these people were looking good several years after she had helped them.
She has some pretty strong opinions about what works and what doesn't but she has no interest in contentious discussions in a forum like this.
If you are having success by following Dr. Atkin’s diet advice, congratulations and more power to you. If you are young your body can handle quite a bit. If someone is older they should consider consulting with a medical professional to avoid certain pitfalls especially if they are a man.
Dr. Atkins went down on April 8, 2013. The low temperature in New York City on April 8, 2013 was 54F. He may have tripped but there was no ice. Those who continue to repeat this fabrication sound just as silly as those who claim that Dr. Atkins gained over 60 pounds from fluid retention in the nine days that he was in the hospital.
You have called me very nasty and insulting names in pretty much every post that you have made. Would it be too much to ask for you to tone it down a bit. I apologize for saying anything that you perceive as nasty about the founder of something that you have very deep feelings about. I am sure that he was a great and wonderful man.
Dr. Atkins went down on April 8, 2003; the low temperature that day was 54F. He may have tripped, but there was no ice. It is interesting how this fabrication that was made up after the fact keeps coming up again and again so many years later.
I thought the ice was freezer ice carelessly thrown out on the sidewalk by a new kid working at a mom and pop carneceria.
carnicería
Thanks for the information on the Keto diet.
You know, if I just read these diet threads I could probably lose a lot of weight. Hard to reach for the bag of cookies next to me reading this!

LOL! That is the ticket yeah!
You are a very nasty person. But I don't blame you... it could be a symptom of low blood sugar from poor dietary habits and very possibly poor perfusion from heart disease as well. Or maybe you are just a nasty old grump who has lived a basically wasted life. Hard to say...
If you want to go to the trouble of checking my posting history... I am sure that I have mentioned my wife and her profession previously. She is the most amazing and beautiful person that I have ever met. And 30 years later she still weighs the same. She is my angel and has unbelievable abilities and full of love. From your disposition I assume that you do not have anyone like her... which is very, very sad. I truly am sorry for you.
Your poor feelings. Since when did FR become a haven for SJWs? Man up.
I think that I should clarify a bit more on this. I didn’t say that you hurt my feelings; I asked you to tone it down a little. I keep hoping that we could actually have a rational and civil discussion on what I found to be an interesting article especially when I looked further into the research that was done by this team and the experiment that they set up to test their theory. It was fascinating. And no, their was no political overtones or affiliations that I could find connected to their work.
But as far as you hurting my feelings... not even a little. And I have no hard feelings at all. I truly am sorry to have pushed your hot buttons. When looking at your posting history and about page I am fascinated by the traveling that you have done. If you find yourself somewhere in the Northwest my wife and I would be very happy to have you come and visit. I understand that you are a very knowledgeable and passionate person.
We used to travel quite a bit also. We are aviation enthusiasts and live on a small airport. We do not plan on giving up the airplane just yet, but we are moving to a less expensive place so that we will have more money to spend on traveling. We have had travel trailers in the past but are looking forward to buying a nice motorhome when we finish our move, one big enough to take a few of our grandkids with us on some interstate adventures.
Please have a great day.
I apologize that I did not see this post from you to someone else in the thread before I responded to you. And I am sorry for your loss of a friend.
I am assuming that you meant in this post that you are a medical professional. Does it concern you that the death certificate indicated that he weighed over 60 pounds more than what his admittance documents indicated just nine days before?
When my own grandmother went into the hospital, she had no cardiac history. But they filled her with so much fluid that she gained nearly 10 pounds and her heart went into an arrhythmia from the electrolyte imbalance. Needless to say this killed her. I am sure that this happens fairly frequently.
Since no autopsy was ever performed on Dr. Atkins we will never really know for sure what killed him. A receptionist that worked with my wife and was her friend announced that she had spinal cancer and would be taking time off for chemotherapy. Two weeks later she was dead from the treatment.
In a conversation with the family at the funeral my wife was told that her death certificate said that she died from spinal cancer. Something about the situation the way that the family recounted the sequence of events didn't sound right to my wife and she brought it up with a doctor that she worked with. They convinced the family to let the doctor review her charts. Things really did not add up. They then convinced the family to have her body exhumed.
The lady never had spinal cancer or any other form of cancer. Her breast implants had leaked and the silicone gel had pooled in places near her spine and the x-ray confused the specialist. Chemo was started with no other confirmation of the presence of cancer. It was a needless death as the leaked silicone was not a threat to her life.
I don’t follow Atkins-as former college rower— still keep a much altered exercise routine to keep lean body mass high and a low (for age) 14 % body fat. It was, back then in college 8% body fat, and in Master’s competition, around 12%— so doing pretty good. Just do NOT take in too many non-complex carbs, and do eat lean meats, and high protein veggies (not Soy— don’t even want to start down that road to old guy man tits, and feminization).
- Not bragging— from my profession- have a complete understanding of the metabolic changes that this diet can effect in people, including shedding pounds by burning fat which is stored in the body from the conversion of excessive unburned carbohydrates (whole sugars, processed foods, the works coupled with inactivity) in the conversion of glucose (from all its sources) to triglycerides— which are then sequestered into fat cells. Someone should look at microscopic photo of a human (find a huge one) fat cell contained in fatty masses (around the belly line, the liver and most internal organs. One MUST, absolutely drink lots of water to clear protein metabolite nitrogenous waste in the kidneys— and thus, also have good kidney function (which Type II diabetics and others do not because of the syndrome X effects on end organ damage— the kidney filter cells for example).
The obesity/diabetes effect is happening to the unfortunate Type II diabetics (and btw there is NO SUCH THING, like the stupid radio ads say— as a “pre-diabetic”. The inherited genes and dosing of genes for a Type II diabetic exist- and usually become expressed later in life but can be forced to be expressed by.... sugar/carb overloads in the diet) with those who have the disease showing up before they are twenty!, still in high school and morbidly obese— drinking big Gulp sugar/fructose corn syrup laden sodas and drinks of all sorts. Morbidly obese little couch potatoes who spend their time online or on their mobile phones.... and get no exercise. Tubs with Type II diabetes in their Teens. Epidemic still in this country. Not preaching. And the conservative tells me— “ok, let people eat themselves to early coronary death”, and not to be buttinski, like the libs who want to manage everything in our lives. It is a real philosophical conundrum- if one knows something about it.
No diabetic should EVER be on an Atkins type or the “ketogenic” (paleo whatever) diet without professional guidance and monitoring, for both the effect on blood glucose and the generation of ketones.... so called ketogenisis. The ketone “spill” measured with dipsticks in the urine-— those are the ones able to be spilled— the ones that impaired function diabetic kidneys cannot— build up and diabetics may express this (in addition to toxic buildup in various organs) with “ketone breath- you can smell it- and it can also blow a FALSE positive of Police DUI breathilyzer (or at least it used to). So— this is not a diet to be played with. If done correctly, HA1C can come way down as well as finger stick blood glucose. And neuropathy possibly averted or abated.
OK, rant and tome over. This is from memory— and pretty sure your AF nurse wife (”fat boy” zoomie weight loss program— I love it— being Navy heh!). However you are succeeding, hope it is healthy for you.
Condolences on your grandmother’s ending. Hate hearing this.
Can assure you, in re: Atkins— that he went into a coma while in neurosurgery to correct/remove a blood clot, and speculating here— reason for the coma being the clot that moved into brain vasculature elsewhere.
Strict BMI— yeah, overweight- he ate well, but smart. The BMI has been hone down to near unachievable levels for average person to attempt. All life is a balance, or... should be.
Regards.
Been a while— his research assistant has a website, directed at the Vitamin C IV work am thinking. The ice was in the building shadow just outside the door transom. Should not have been there, salt had gotten the rest.
Thank you so much for the thoughtful and well considered replies. My wife and I both come from athletic backgrounds as well. I was once a state champion and nationally ranked cyclist. I used to ride over 10,000 miles a year so my diet was very important to me, but more to maintain my energy level and weight. I was so happy to be able to consult with dieticians at the Olympic Training Center when I went there to try out for the worlds team.
My wife is highly competitive at everything that she does. When I met her she was the Northwest Regional Aerobics Dance Champion. I had never even heard of such a thing. But I found a real respect for her athletic abilities, after trying to keep up with her routines and especially afte I put her on the back of a tandem.
Normally riding a tandem is a bit of a drag for a bicycle racer, but she took to it like no other stoker that I had ever ridden with male or female. Within a week we were both standing in perfect sync when powering over short steep upgrades and dropping almost everyone who tried to catch our wheel even when ascending hills - which if you have any tandem bicycle experience is basically unheard of. I knew that I had to marry her for her power to weight ratio if nothing else. Even after we were hit by a car she refused to give it up.
She even let me talk her into hang gliding with me. And one day when I returned to the airport in my homemade ultralight airplane she said, “We need an airplane that I can go flying in too.” So I always liked to joke at our vintage and experimental aircraft club meetings that she was the first wife in the history of aviation who had said such a thing.
I was familiar with the high dose vitamin C fad and tried it for awhile but it seemed to have no effect on my riding performance and I was worried that it contributed to dehydration during my training regimen.
As far as ice being in the shadows when Dr. Atkins fell... it had been weeks since the overnight temperatures in New York City had fallen below freezing with daytime highs mostly in the 50s and 60s. It is basically impossible that he managed to find an icy piece of pavement to fall on. He could easily have tripped, or the fall which caused his head injury could have been the result of a cardiac event which I saw many times during my career, especially considering that he had a history of heart problems related to his low HDL levels.
So you will have to forgive me for remaining skeptical about this somewhat irrelevant point which none the less is a tenant of the mythology surrounding your friend. As far as I am concerned his death came at much too young of an age, but I have known many others who died at the same age and even earlier from heart problems that were at least partly the result of very poor dietary choices.
I just received a lecture myself in a conversation at my latest checkup from my Doctor who is an older gentleman, about my choice of what he said was too much meat in my diet. He is a bit of a character but he keeps up with all the latest research and I trust his advice. He noticed that I had put on 5 pounds from my previous visit and I blamed all the smoked meat that I had prepared since Thanksgiving.
You’re welcome, and it incredible what you hear out there, when you research it.
The 2 things I remember most are the following:
1) When the American Diabetes Association was asked why their diets keep pushing carbs, their response is that people won’t seriously cut down on carbs anyway, so why tell them that it’s a drug-free option that also works (not to mention, works better than drugs)? They could be right, but I suspect that a huge number of diabetics (i.e., in the millions) would at least try that approach, rather than face what’s coming at them, even if they do all the drugs.
2) A doctor who understands that low-carb diets work was asked why he doesn’t recommend it to his patients. His answer: He doesn’t want to be sued if some of his patients don’t follow it closely.
I didn’t mean to imply processed foods. Fish chicken beef pork lamb and eggs.
