Sometimes it seems from reading posts on here that the average Freeper thinks that guns are pretty much banned in the UK. They aren't, though.
Handguns are banned (unfortunately), but otherwise we have a reasonable choice of legal weaponry, including Accuracy International sniper rifles if you have £23K to spare. Semi-automatic rifles are limited to .22 rimfire, but bolt-action rifles are not.
Here's a link to my nearest gun dealer, so you can see what's available this side of the pond:

Comments welcome - not trying to start any fights, just interested in opinions. Personally I own a Mossberg 500 and am looking for a semi-auto shotgun for clay breaking as my arthritis is getting increasingly irritating! :-)
Glad to hear from you here! Hope you will stay and continue the discussion as long as there’s actual information being exchanged. It’s cool to see your link to a gun store. I look forward to looking it it.
You have some questions about our laws.
This is an excellent resource to know the handgun laws in all of our 50 states. You will see that there are significant differences. Understand that Mr. Trump campaigned on a national reciprocity (federal) law to force states to honor each other’s carry permits just like they honor driving licenses.
There’s a strong movement now for “permitless carry.” It has taken effect in a number of states. It does not in any way relax the laws on who is legally allowed to possess a gun at all.
No restrictions calibre-wise on lever or bolt action for rifles. Pump action shotguns are 2+1 for Section 2 and 7+1 or more for Section 1, same as semi-autos.
Lever-action Winchester for eg:
Apparently handguns are available in the UK provided they have a barrel longer than 12” and 24” overall or are cap and ball percussion revolvers.
I found one Cowboy Action Shooting club in the UK, and wondered how they met the requirement for having 2 handguns necessary for competition.

No, they don't, though most do.
Not sure how they’d meet the rules - will chack out the link. I knew that the unfeasibly long handguns were legal, not seen them in use!
Nice sound moderators available. Need that here in the USA.
Apparently pump & autoloading shotguns are still legal in Britain but they were banned in Australia; the police simply ring up the owner and tell him to bring it in because he doesn’t want them coming to his house.
A Turkish arms company came up with a lever action shotgun for import to Oz but the nannies quickly intervened & alerted the PM who sent along a note to Parliament where the lever gun was added to the banned list.
“Stroke of the pen, law of the land. Kinda cool.” - Paul Begala as the outgoing Clinton signed a blizzard of EOs.
Britains are four times as likely to get mugged as Americans. That says it all.
Indeed. Luckily enough it never happened to me, even though I lived in London for 21 years, but it happened to a couple of friends. What's the law on shooting a mugger in the US?
Yeah, you cant argue with em because they think what they have left isnt really anything majorly different than what we have here, its just minor details.
The details are not minor. Draconian is correct.
Wow. I am so sorry you are a conquered people.
A fast draw would be impossible. But the cap and ball revolvers could be had in a reasonable length.
If you want to see what cowboy action shooting is about, watch this.

How does one know hes not retreating in order to regroup, or get other mates to come back again in bigger numbers?
Your example is a farmer guy who is an old man who suffers a suprise attack by a criminal. Those are two things that in America justify his reaction, look up Disparity of Force.
How do you know hes only going to mug you? We have to trust the criminal? Who may have a knife or gun on you?
We only have to fear for our life or permanent bodily damage. Generally once confronted there is little to no chance to try to get away from the situation.
Surprise attacks allow for greater use of force as a response. Its called Disparity of force and it is an established legal principle used by the victim/target of a criminals assault to justify their actions.
Its been so long, they cannot even see it anymore.
“I have a right to own a shotgun.”
In my American eyes, you have a privilege to own a shotgun. Not a right.
Au contraire! You can shoot a fleeing suspect in Texas - if it's nighttime and you are recovering property.
(B) to prevent the other who is fleeing immediately after committing burglary, robbery, aggravated robbery, or theft during the nighttime from escaping with the property; and
(3) he reasonably believes that:
(A) the land or property cannot be protected or recovered by any other means; or
(B) the use of force other than deadly force to protect or recover the land or property would expose the actor or another to a substantial risk of death or serious bodily injury.

Someone makes off with your tv at night in TX, and you reasonably believe that he'll kick your ### or kill you if you try to stop him - rule .45 is in play.
Thanks for the info - I was wondering what the rules were.
Thanks for the link - interesting stuff.
