Investors Business Daily ^ | 14 Feb 2019 | GILLIAN RICH

Production on the Airbus A380 superjumbo jet will end, and deliveries will stop in 2021 after Airbus (EADSY) renegotiated an order with Emirates, the largest A380 customer.

...The Airbus A380 entered commercial service just 11 years ago and can only be accommodated at about a dozen airports worldwide due to its size.

...Meanwhile, the Boeing 747 looks to live on, even as demand from carriers also shrinks.

I only flew once on a DC-8 (Air Jamaica). It was in 1981 and the DC-8 was already on its last legs. There were so few people on the plane the captain asked us to move to the front of the aircraft to distribute the weight.

Other flights on jumbo aircraft (DC-10s, L1011s and 747s) were comparable with the huge seating area. However, the best experience was on British Air as they provided great service even in tourist class. (They called “tourist” something else but can’t remember what it was ;o)

I was on one when the projector failed (1970?)
They made a quick landing at Boing Field to pick up technicians, to repair it, on the way to Toyko.

Also on one that had a load of Vietnamese babies, they ask everyone on the plane if they would like to hold one for a while.

2 million miles

Oh my!

That is 4,000 hours at 500MPH, not counting all the in and out and...

40 hours a week 50 weeks in a work year, two years+++

Or maybe like my brother the MIS salaryman, claims forty hours pay for 100 hours of work?

I have known some that dream of such a work life.
Far be it from me.

I flew Business Class on Air Emirates from Dubai to Kennedy a few years ago. It was by far the most pleasurable long-distance flight ever. Each Business and First Class passenger got their own “cocoon” for sitting and sleeping. I can see why it would make a romantic trip difficult, but for the single passenger, it was sublime. Oh, and the bar wasn’t bad either. My choices of scotch were Chivas 12, Macallan 12 or Glenfiddich 18. Yum.

Have flown on them all and especially liked the L1011, however fly consistently now on Boeing’s Dreamliner. Love that plane: quieter, smoother, less jetlag. Flew Quantas last trip to Australia because they had the Dreamliner.

Never flown on 787s L1011s were good too...most of my millions flying thankfully was in the late 70s, 80s, 90s and early 2000s...have initially avoided the gestapo times since the false flag of 9/11.

Still travel to Asia at least every other year and to visit the kids w/i the 48 - but hate the before and during BS!

Plus the miles perks are a laugh compared to what they once were and for sure the USA airlines treat you like you are cattle compared to the international (the Asian) airlines are in my opinion the best, yea I know about the muslim air carriers

I was curious about your comment about less jetlag on the Dreamliner (787) and found this quote from Boeing: "The cabin pressure on the 787 is higher and the humidity higher than other airplanes. Basically, passengers on board will feel like they are at an altitude of 6,000 feet, 2,000 feet lower than a standard flight. The changes will cut down on passenger fatigue, dry eyes and headaches."

Since we were discussing comfortable flight, I then thought about the worst aircraft I've ever had the misfortune to travel on. What immediately came to mind was the Short, a commuter airplane or puddle jumper that I remember from the 80s. Imagine a cargo container or a box car with wings and you have a good image of the Short. It was noisy and slow. I occasionally had the impression that I could get out and walk faster. Here is an image.

It seems that the MATS/MAC contract flights were always DC-8s and always overcrowded and uncomfortable. The 747 flight back to LAX was memorable because I could get up and wander around. That was quite a luxury on the flight.

Nothing beats my first flight to Hawaii though. It was on a Oklahoma ANG C-124 and I don't think we were ever 20 feet above the waves for the first 4 hours.

Easy for any thinking/rereading type to spell correctly.

And also, it takes time.

The 747 was designed by Engineers using Slide Rules.

The A380 was designed by Engineers using Computers.

Steerage?

Yep, that trip on the Titanic was rough in Steerage, but I survived. (Hey, I'm old but not that old!)

I believe the term on BA at that time was Traveler. It's now Economy which is probably steerage. In 1998 they provided us with a kit which had a blindfold for sleeping, booties if you wanted to remove your shoes and mouthwash/toothbrush-paste and some kind of candy, as I recall.
