I only flew once on a DC-8 (Air Jamaica). It was in 1981 and the DC-8 was already on its last legs. There were so few people on the plane the captain asked us to move to the front of the aircraft to distribute the weight.

Other flights on jumbo aircraft (DC-10s, L1011s and 747s) were comparable with the huge seating area. However, the best experience was on British Air as they provided great service even in tourist class. (They called “tourist” something else but can’t remember what it was ;o)

Have flown on them all and especially liked the L1011, however fly consistently now on Boeing’s Dreamliner. Love that plane: quieter, smoother, less jetlag. Flew Quantas last trip to Australia because they had the Dreamliner.

It seems that the MATS/MAC contract flights were always DC-8s and always overcrowded and uncomfortable. The 747 flight back to LAX was memorable because I could get up and wander around. That was quite a luxury on the flight.

Nothing beats my first flight to Hawaii though. It was on a Oklahoma ANG C-124 and I don't think we were ever 20 feet above the waves for the first 4 hours.
