There is no rule. The case that was made is that you shouldn’t confirm a justice in the last year of a lame duck presidency. Trump won’t be in that situation for another 5 years, if at all. In any event, since there is no rule, McConnell can (and likely will given the chance) push the confirmation process through if it presents itself.

One is not technically a lame duck if one is running for re-election. That should be the argument.
