A controversial academic today risked to wrath of Britain's veterans and their families after calling the RAF airmen who bombed Nazi Germany war criminals.
Dr Kehinde Andrews, a professor of black studies at Birmingham City University, said the decision to build tributes like the Bomber Command Memorial desecrated with white paint yesterday was like 'justifying terrorism'.
He said: We are talking about a war crime. I think it is a tragedy they died, but we dont need a statue.
His extraordinary statements came on ITV's Good Morning Britain today where host Piers Morgan asked him: 'Why do you see everything that we are proud of as sticks to beat our country with? Sometimes you have to stand up and fight'.

War is a Crime. WW II was a horrible, grim, awful thing that defined the world we live in today. No noble acts here—just death and horror. War should always be the LAST choice—never the first.
YOU ARE WRONG. The USA nuked two jap cities and killed several hundreds of thousands of civilians and saved hundreds of thousands or maybe millions of other people both US citizens {the good guys} and japs, the assholes that started the war with the USA, with a sneak attack on civilians.
Awful, hell no, it was merciful you bleeding heart sissy.
War is awful, but once started, you cannot cede a single tactic or give up any advantage to the enemy.
I include torture and do not give a fat rat's ass about the Geneva Convention, which means we play by rules, and the enemy laughs as they cut the balls {or nipples} off of any American they capture.
Waterboarding is not even child's play when it comes to what our enemies do, and we wail and cry about our folks dripping a little water on someone's face. Bullshit.
Nuke all enemies, government civilian centers first.
I’m willing to do whatever is necessary to win a war of national survival. That doesn’t mean I have to think killing civilians is anything other than awful. Get a grip.
They should have bombed the Germans with Lutefisk. That would have stopped them cold. Disgusting stuff.
Even immediately after the war, the sheeple of formerly great Britain were so divided over the bombing of civilian targets that they never erected a monument to the RAF bomber command until 2012.
Three days ago the monument was vandalized.
I guess they never thought that was fair retribution for the Huns having bombed London in both world wars.
I do think Dresden was not the best Target. It was untouched and we did it to appease Stalin. FLAME AWAY!
Pathetic revisionist bullsh*t.
Plenty of controversy over WWII aerial bombardment. Bomber Harris was in charge of British strategic nighttime (read, grossly targeted) bombing. He was a very controversial figure after the war. Harris operated on the theory that the German economy could be sufficiently damaged by area bombing as to preclude the Germans from continuing the war. Which, in hindsight, pretty much takes nukes.Harris was so committed to bombing cities that he dragged his feet when ordered to divert from city-busting to support of USAAF efforts to strangle German fuel supplies. He just simply wouldnt do it, despite all indications (which proved out postwar) that attacking their fuel supply infrastructure was close to a show-stopper for the Germans. E.g., one of the essential intermediate objectives of "Operation Watch on the Rhine (the attack which launched the Battle of the Bulge) was to capture allied fuel depots to obtain enough fuel to continue their attack. And German aircraft ran on lower octane gasoline than was available to the Allies, which naturally compromised the performance of their planes (other than Me 262s, of course). Britain and the US were desperate to keep the USSR afloat in large part because they didnt want Germany to control the oil resources of the USSR.

Randall HansenIndiscriminate bombing was even more controversial in the US; the propaganda was put out that the Norden bombsight was a secret to be guarded at all cost because it was so accurate. Fact is, it couldnt have been as accurate as claimed - the tech just wasnt there, it takes smart bombs to achieve the claimed accuracy. Scruples about collateral damage to civilians was part of the motivation for the propaganda.

I’ve heard these arguments before and I believe Pat Buchanan makes similar sympathetic references in his books on World War II.
If only we could run wars today by WWII standards, but we can’t, because under today’s wars run by JAG lawyers, these things would be considered war crimes.
As horrible as Dresden was, my response is, sucks to be you that you started the damn war, Germany. I have little sympathies for the nations that start a war, and their ancestors decades later bitch about how the war was conducted.
Precisely.
Hindsight’s 20/20. We did what we thought was right at the time.
I’m with you. As a Christian I use to adhere to Just War theory, but I now categorically reject it for Total War. Interesting I think Total War was a concept introduced by President Grant in dealing with the Lakota, and they were less deserving of it than most. But yes, we owe nothing less to our own troops than Total War. South African mercenaries that have been used know this and utilize these tactics. I wish I remember what African country it was, but what the UN could not do with 10,000 soldiers mercs did with a few hundred, by poisoning water supplies, ect.
Goebbels asked for “Totaler Krieg”, and he got it!
Calling the RAF and USAAF war criminals is the equivalent of being a Holocaust denier/apologist. Piers should be shunned by all polite company.
Hold your fire on Piers. He is the good guy here, he was blasting the professor who said that.
Yes, the German National Socialists were horrible people.
That, of course, excuses being just like them.
The Germans weren’t going to be able to pull that “Stabbed in the back” nonsense this time around.
Arthur Harris, by his own admission, had no interest in destroying the German war-making capability. His sole interest was in killing Germans for the sake of killing Germans. I cast no aspersions on the men of Bomber Command, who faithfully and bravely carried out their orders in the belief that they were doing their part to win a war they had not started. Their orders, however, were both abominable and counterproductive. The blame for that lies squarely at the feet of those who gave the orders. Harris’ deliberate refusal to cooperate with USAAF 8th Air Force was reprehensible in the extreme.
You’re right. I misread it. Went flying off the handle. I apologize. It is the professor that is basically a holocaust denier.
