George Will: The shabbiest U.S. president ever is an inexpressibly sad specimen
Washington Compost ^ | January 18, 2019 | George Will

Half or a quarter of the way through this interesting experiment with an incessantly splenetic presidency, much of the nation has become accustomed to daily mortifications. Or has lost its capacity for embarrassment, which is even worse.

If the country’s condition is calibrated simply by economic data — if, that is, the United States is nothing but an economy — then the state of the union is good. Except that after two years of unified government under the party that formerly claimed to care about fiscal facts and rectitude, the nation faces a $1 trillion deficit during brisk growth and full employment. Unless the president has forever banished business cycles — if he has, his modesty would not have prevented him from mentioning it — the next recession will begin with gargantuan deficits, which will be instructive.

The president has kept his promise not to address the unsustainable trajectory of the entitlement state (about the coming unpleasant reckoning, he said: “Yeah, but I won’t be here”), and his party’s congressional caucuses have elevated subservience to him into a political philosophy. The Republican-controlled Senate — the world’s most overrated deliberative body — will not deliberate about, much less pass, legislation the president does not favor. The evident theory is that it would be lèse-majesté for the Senate to express independent judgments.

And that senatorial dignity is too brittle to survive the disapproval of a president not famous for familiarity with actual policies. Congressional Republicans have their ears to the ground — never mind Winston Churchill’s observation that it is difficult to look up to anyone in that position.

George Will has his servants starch and iron his shorts because his mother no longer is here to do that. His little bow ties are set out next to each day’s coordinated clothes on the bed by his help.
If he has a good bowel movement his day starts off happy but if not then look out for his harsh wrath in print.

A conservative he-man to look up to he ain’t.

Between Reagan and Trump he and the Bushes were the “leaders” to argue against the liberals in the media. Let’s not let that happen ever again.

Long live FR!

>>This is also the only president who was attacked,CONSTANTLY, from the moment he was elected.

The “investigation” coup began BEFORE he was elected.

The same Crooked Culture of Democrats who tried to steal the election for Hitlery Rotten Clinton were surprised he won and surprised they haven’t broken him yet.

And the Democrats called for Nixon’s impeachment in his first term, long before Watergate. And they called for Reagan’s impeachment in his first term long before Iran Contra, and Democrats wanted Bush I impeached over rumors of the 1980 hostage situation, and they wanted Bush II impeached over “war crimes”.

The peaceful transfer of power has been dead in this country since 1960 when JFK stole the election.

These people live in well-protected bubbles, surrounded only by those who are likewise deluded. It’s really an amazing phenomenon. Someone could probably write a book about it someday.

George and Bill Kristol are the two most despicable never Trumpers. Neither one has a shred of integrity.

Neuticles are cool. I suggested sending a bunch of them to the Republicans in Congress during the Kavanaugh hearing.

Is his wife still a Repub campaign manager pulling millions even when they lose or did Trump get her fired too? His family income must have dropped considerably from President Trump?

George Will is right about the deficit. And he is correct that Trump doesn't care about the deficit. Trump is a populist, not a conservative. The fight over deficits has two important elements: (1) a commitment to economic growth, which Trump has; and (2) entitlement reform, which Trump ignores because populists don't talk about cutting popular spending. But without entitlement reform, we will end up bankrupt, and probably with a vastly larger government, expanded yet again to cope with the crisis. I think Trump knows this but figures he will be out of the White House when the collapse occurs.

Democrats have always been ok with bankrupting the country as a prelude to full-blown socialism. Republicans used to have a principled strategy, but not the votes to implement it. The odds of salvaging a free country have never been especially good. They are getting steadily longer.
