George Will: The shabbiest U.S. president ever is an inexpressibly sad specimen
Washington Compost ^ | January 18, 2019 | George Will

Posted on 01/19/2019 7:38:19 AM PST by EdnaMode

Half or a quarter of the way through this interesting experiment with an incessantly splenetic presidency, much of the nation has become accustomed to daily mortifications. Or has lost its capacity for embarrassment, which is even worse.

If the country’s condition is calibrated simply by economic data — if, that is, the United States is nothing but an economy — then the state of the union is good. Except that after two years of unified government under the party that formerly claimed to care about fiscal facts and rectitude, the nation faces a $1 trillion deficit during brisk growth and full employment. Unless the president has forever banished business cycles — if he has, his modesty would not have prevented him from mentioning it — the next recession will begin with gargantuan deficits, which will be instructive.

The president has kept his promise not to address the unsustainable trajectory of the entitlement state (about the coming unpleasant reckoning, he said: “Yeah, but I won’t be here”), and his party’s congressional caucuses have elevated subservience to him into a political philosophy. The Republican-controlled Senate — the world’s most overrated deliberative body — will not deliberate about, much less pass, legislation the president does not favor. The evident theory is that it would be lèse-majesté for the Senate to express independent judgments.

And that senatorial dignity is too brittle to survive the disapproval of a president not famous for familiarity with actual policies. Congressional Republicans have their ears to the ground — never mind Winston Churchill’s observation that it is difficult to look up to anyone in that position.

George will is just pissed off that he has to go to his liberal cocktail parties under the cover of darkness.

Good job, George. Luckily your brand of white liberal Republicanism is being discarded.

Will had no problem with Bush’s biggest expansion of entitlements in my lifetime or billions to Africa... but Trump not dealing in existing entitlements, created long before he arrived is the end of the world...

I’d love to see entitlements reduced, but if we don’t stop the globalist march, it won’t matter.

If Trump views stopping Globalism as more important than entitlement battles for now, I am ok with that call.

Embarrassment is not an issue for me. I was being lied to by my politicians and my new media. I was being ignored by my country. And there are lots of us. The government was giving control to outside organizations. They spent our tax dollars but were not controlled by our vote or even our constitution. So George may worry how this looks to outsiders. But Brexit and Italy and Brazil demonstrate that many outsiders see it our way. We will take some embarrassment if it means we get back our vote, and our rights. And we can out those media companies who proclaim that they are journalists when they are just propaganda

On the money. Crickets Will is just part of the cabal of presidential destruction. His fall has been long and fast.

Odd he did not turn his wrath on those that have done great harm on the many occasions that you cite. Uranium to Russia—help them to help themselves.

Crickets should retire to calling numbers at the nearest bingo center.

Old age often brings on diminishing cognitive skills, which the senescent victim tries to conceal with hos own ill tempered splenetic whining.

“The president’s most consequential exercise of power has been the abandonment of the Trans-Pacific Partnership, opening the way for China to fill the void of U.S. involvement. His protectionism — government telling Americans what they can consume, in what quantities and at what prices...”

Well, George, that statement tags you as a miserable liar.

It must be difficult to wake up every morning and realize you are the snide, anal retentive George Will. And much worse to the woman who is unfortunate enough to wake up with him.

"Has George ever had a real job?"

George started out as a used ideas salesman, and branched out into recycling worn out words.

I see Buckley like a Thurston Howell III. It’s that Superior New England high brow superior breeding mentality. Will George will is a flat out pussy. That SNL is over 20 years only, and they knew it back then. All brains and no smarts. Buckley however possessed both, and unlike Will, wasn’t afraid to end the insults and name calling with a hook to the face! Vidal and Chomsky both needed a serious beat down with no mercy!
