Can an iPad Replace My Laptop or Desktop Computer?
Lifewire ^ | Jan 2 2019 | Daniel Nations

Did you know the iPad Pro is more powerful than the entry-level laptops lining the shelves at Best Buy? The iPad earns that "Pro" name with a processor that is on par with a mid-level PC. This is in addition to a screen resolution that exceeds many of those same laptops and the graphics power of an XBOX 360. And when you combine this with an operating system that supports slide-over and split-screen multitasking and a virtual touchpad, it's about time to reevaluate the iPad as a laptop killer.

I ‘m using a 9.7 inch screened 128gb 2017 model right now.
I can type with my thumbs while I’m laying on my back on the couch.
I am addicted to playing War Robots and I use it all the time.
I have a desktop PC too for working.
The ipad gets the most use.

Replying using my iPad Pro... Absolutely.

I used to take a micro doze computer with me everywhere. But they have slow startups that get slower over time. They get viruses. They get email viruses. Etc.

I would have never gotten one, but I was getting my daughter a mini computer for school. The salesman said, hey we just got in a shipment of 30 iPads, would you want one.

So I got two. Both as gifts.

One for my mother. And one for my father.

For each, it was the best gift ever.

They used them constantly, and gav3 now replaces them with next gen iPads.

After about six months, they were having too much fun. So I got one for myself. Shortly after that, I stopped lugging that nonfunctional microdoze around and switched to the iPad.

But as with everything, it depends on what you plan to try to use it for.

With my father, top use is to facetime chat with family overseas. He used to use his computer for the video chats. But the iPad beat the computer silly in ease of use. Last time I counted, at least 6 of the relatives had also gotten iPads as a result.

He also likes to use it to record rehearsals. It does a great job there also. The cameras on the device are pretty good.

Now he still has his computers, but uses the iPad most of the Time.

For my mother - email and words with friends are the top use. She still has a computer, but gets her emails on the iPad because it works. She can work from the easy chair in front of the TV. The computer was iced up with viruses for a year - til I came back and fixed it for her.

For me... mainly internet access. Freerepublic, emails, searches... Well, and Netflix... lots of netflix.

You could, but why?

Now if you are out in the field and need access to that piping drawing... or technical spec... Works great.

Why?

Pages (Apple word processor) or Word both work.

Mostly use it for emails, chats, instant messages and other less formal communications.

If Apple would put a phone in the iPad it would be a great hit. But it would kill iPhone sales.

If you have more serious things to do, the logistics of trying to accomplish it on an iPad is frustrating, with touch only and sensitivities that make doing real work, sometimes even just typing, aggravating. Never mind the screen size. Smaller screens (looking at you, mini-computer “phone”) just are strain-inducing and harder to use for scanning over.

So true. I miss the mouse and cut and paste is hard without it. Also, I have HTML apps on my PC that make posting thread and answering posts a breeze. If I could still purchase a laptop with WIN 7 I would do so in a heartbeat.

Yes. And the pen. For most use I prefer the iPad with just the built in touch screen. Not much use for the pen either.

If you really want a keyboard, you probably want a computer.

Try the iPad first without the extras.

Otherwise it is like leaving California for Texas... then voting in California policies.

Tablets are light, easy to use and simple. You can tough tile on the pad very quickly.

Or you can talk to it like this. The iPad has a voice command where you can talk and it will take your dictation it is actually much faster than typing I am pretty accurate.

Cut and paste actually works pretty good on an iPad

“miss the mouse and cut and paste is hard without it. ”

Like that,

It depends on WHAT you do with your PC, doesn’t it?

Actually it IS hard, as many times that damn “select” and blue highlighter refuse to cover or NOT cover parts of large phrase.

I can’t say how many times I’ve tried and given up and just typed it in instead of trying to make that “select” work properly.

In not, no thanks.

For give me, in advance. Did you type that with your custom keyboard? Did you miss the typo on your 24-inch monitor?

At 85 when you have a touch of arthritis in your hands, using a touch screen device can be a challenge... Although I wouldn’t give up my tablet for anything short of a guaranteed 30 more years to be around, my laptop (8.1) and desk top machines are powerful and convenient...

There is some software where they don’t let you select the text easily.

Facebook is one of the bad actors.

You used to be able to do it easily. But Facebook changed something mak8ng it difficult to do.
