WEEKLY GARDEN THREAD JAN 6, 2019
freerepublic | JAN 6, 2019 | greeneyes

The Weekly Gardening Thread is a weekly gathering of folks that love soil, seeds and plants of all kinds. From complete newbies that are looking to start that first potted plant, to gardeners with some acreage, to Master Gardener level and beyond, we would love to hear from you.

This thread is non-political, although you will find that most here are conservative folks. No matter what, you won’t be flamed and the only dumb question is the one that isn’t asked.

It is impossible to hijack the Weekly Gardening Thread. Planting, Harvest to Table(recipes)preserving, good living - there is no telling where it will go and... that is part of the fun and interest. Jump in and join us!

NOTE: This is a once a week ping list. We do post to the thread during the week. Links to related articles and discussions which might be of interest are welcomed any time-and don't have to be about gardening.

Greetings from Missouri. Nice sunny day this Saturday. Hubby got the additional dirt in some of the refurbished raised beds. I got a few things done too. Sat down and fell asleep. Just woke up at midnight. So am posting late. Sorry to be so late.

Hope to plant some winter rye is some of the beds. This spring I hope to plant some triticale shademaster.

That's a cross between wheat and rye, if I recall correctly, but will grow in partial shade. The lemon tree continues to put out beautiful blooms.

The aloe vera is also getting ready to bloom. The turmeric sitting on the table next to the crock pot is doing well, the other turmeric is struggling a bit. The bay leaf has 6 new leaves.

One of the tomato branches I stuck in a pot has rooted and has flowers. One of the flowers has tiny green tomato starting to grow.

Here's a link on growing ginger and turmeric courtesy of Black Agnes. https://www.tyrantfarms.com/how-to-grow-organic-turmeric-and-ginger-anywhere/

Hubby has a long list of seeds to order from Bakers Creek Seeds. Good thing they will last longer than a year-I don't think we have room to plant them all LOL.

Have a great weekend. Prayers up for all. God Bless.

I bet your lemon tree smells divine!

Not much going on here.

Garlic count is up to 51.

It’s been raining all day and night but nothing dramatic.

Yes it is wafting a pleasant scent all over the room. I love it when it blooms like that.

We have been lucky so far with storms. We have had rain, while places south and north have had snow, hail, or sleet. The really cold weather hasn’t been too bad this season-so far at least.

I’ve been reading and listening to Vids on the Eddy Minimum. Most think we will get a repeat of the Dalton minimum, but some think it will be the even colder Maunder Minimum. Watched some Videos from Oppenheimer Ranch, Adapt 2030, and ice age farmer.

Interesting that during those cold periods, the NY harbor froze over. Several rivers in UK and Europe froze over, and they even had roads on the ice that were used. Kinda like the ice roads in Alaska I guess.

Interesting.

We haven’t had any really bad storms yet and not too cold but last week we had some high winds.

I hope we don’t get the really cold weather that people are predicting.

I do enjoy eating.

Nothing to do with gardening but yesterday, we went out on the lake on the neighbor’s pontoon. Six people and a weiner dog.

Temps in the low 60s.
The pontoon has a plastic enclosure covering the back half of the deck.
Perfect day for getting some sun.

I enjoy eating too. That’s why we started gardening in earnest about 10 years ago. Also why we are going to have some way of growing more vegetables indoors during the winter.

As we go further into the Eddy Minimum, the growing season will be getting shorter and shorter, we are also only adding fruit trees that are rated at least a zone 4.

Sounds like fun. I sometimes wish we had built a home at terre du lac, where they have a lake, but hubby didn’t want to drive that far to work.

The N. East has had it pretty bad so far this year. We have been fortunate here-the storms have either gone north or south of us.

Dozens of pontoons, bass boats and one cruiser spotted on the lake yesterday.
The water was a bit cloudy from the two and a half inch rain of last week.

A few large floaties—mostly tree limbs, were spotted.
Neighbor’s wiener dog, Rufus, kept an eye out...

Mostly bitter cold.

My sister, however, who lives in Maine, has had over SIX major snow events so far this winter. EEK.

Catch any fish, or did you just bask in the sunshine?

That's tough, but at least it's not Siberia yet. That reminds me: Did you ever see that interview with Megan Kelly with Putin?

She asked him about Globull Warming and about Trump pulling out of the Paris Accord.

He had the entire crowd laughing at her stupidity.

It was sunny in the Piedmont yesterday. I was able to work on my dad’s front property removing fallen branches and stacking them up. Come Monday I’ll put everything in the truck and take it to the top of the hill - the city should pick up everything. The whole area is covered with ivy and the trees are almost overcome with vines. The next thing I’ll do is take the chainsaw and shave the trees that are affected then when the weather is fair for a stretch I’ll apply brush killer all around the area of the trees. This is something I’ve been wanting to do for a long time. In the summer time I’m always worried about encountering snakes (last year we found a young rattlesnake on the property). In the winter time I can see the shape of everything so much better.

Love those sunny days in the winter!! We have had much cloudier weather than usual here. I was reading about the Grand Solar Minimum some more this weekend.

It seems that the magnetic shield gets weaker during minimums, which results in more cosmic radiation reaching through and also more clouds. We have been using grow lights on really cloudy days.
