Maison Hullibarger’s father tells the Detroit Free Press that he asked the priest to stop talking during the Dec. 8 funeral Mass. But Jeff Hullibarger says the Rev. Don LaCuesta continued giving a critical sermon at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Temperance.

Hullibarger says some mourners left the church crying.

The archdiocese released a statement Thursday saying it’s sorry that an “unbearable situation was made even more difficult.” The archdiocese says LaCuesta will not preach at funerals “for the foreseeable future.”

People commit suicide to escape.

I think the punishment for suicide is Groundhog Day, where you are condemned to living your life over and over again for eternity.

Eulogies are not to be done at Catholic Funeral Masses. Speeches of any kind, as a general rule, are not part of the Liturgy.

I did not know that, thank you,

Here is some more to the story besides the singular limited scope the post chose to give it.

The Bible is ALL ABOUT the Sovereignty of God over Life and Death, from beginning to end.

God says "I have set before yoy Life and Death, and Blessing and a curse." And then God explicitly commands us, "Choose Life". (Deuteronomy 30:19)

Many of the greatest saints and heroes of the Bible faced overwhelming depression and sometimes wrote that they wished they had never even been born. King David, (Psalm 13:2-4), the prophet Jeremiah, (Jeremiah 20:14-18), and Job, (Job 7:15-16) among others, all reached low points where they despaired of their very lives.

Job says, “So that my soul chooseth strangling, and death rather than my life. I loathe it; I would not live always: let me alone; for my days are vanity” (Job 7:15-16).

Yet, each one of these men were blessed by God, and persevered through their trials as an example to us. Though they faced great suffering and injustice, they kept their faith in God and His goodness, and in so doing, were sustained and led into abundant life.

You are way too judgmental, without ecidence. You don’t even know what he said.

“Get back on the Roman Hamster Wheel of Guilt & useless Works!!”

“Ignore those Scriptures!!”

“And we’re doubling your quota of bricks! Now go gather your own straw too!”

That they would know the depth of the love of God.

That they could see His Grace.

Yet while you hold up David as an example if he were alive today he and Bathsheba's marriage would be condemned as a "grave" sin in Roman Catholicism.

They would be forbidden from participating in the Lord's Supper.

Rome would completely shut them out.

Why is it necessary to call in your army? Can’t you make your points by yourself as she does?

Suicide is a true sin unless the person is mentally disordered. It is the laxity towards things like assisted suicide, euthanasia, abortion, etc. which has led to the West dropping like a stone.

Obviously we are not all wired the same. I for one will never point a gun at myself, loaded or unloaded or do anything similar that is equally dangerous. Same applies to general firearms safety, which is to never point a gun at anyone unless you have the full intention of pulling the trigger.

One thing that totally pi$$es me off is when someone jokingly points an empty gun at someone. I get the strong urge to take the gun away and use it to beat some sense into them. There is no such thing as an empty gun.

Another is when a hunter sees someone in the distant, and uses the rifle scope to see who it is.

No....it's YOUR denomination that's way to judgmental on this issue.

Further, YOU are touting the "company line" on this issue.

Because I think it's important for my friends to see the callousness of Roman Catholicism on display.

Suicide is a true sin unless the person is mentally disordered.

Wow. The compassion of the Roman Catholic denomination.

It is the laxity towards things like assisted suicide, euthanasia, abortion, etc. which has led to the West dropping like a stone.

You're lumping in assisted suicide with what happened to this teenager??

They should remember that years ago a funeral mass would not have been possible for a person who self murdered.

You appear so weak when you call in your little army - who are well-versed in disliking “The Roman Religion” and need no help from you. And yes, all forms of suicide are morally wrong - bringing great heartache to the people left behind and endangering one’s mortal soul (except in the case, of course, of mental illness). Sad to see you disagree.

You are way too judgmental, without ecidence. You don’t even know what he said.

That's right...stand up and defend your priest....might as well be defending the homosexual predators in Roman Catholicism.

I honestly cannot believe you are even trying to defend this mess.

From the Daily Mail.....

A family whose son died from suicide expressed outrage after a priest suggested he might not get into heaven and 'called him a sinner' at his funeral, according to the boy's family.

Maison Hullibarger, an 18-year-old from Temperance, Michigan, died on December 4 after taking his own life.

Hullibarger’s grieving family said Reverend Don LaCuesta would not stop bringing up his cause of death during the teenager’s funeral on December 8, the Detroit Free Press reports.

'It was his time to tell everybody what he thought of suicide, (and) we couldn’t believe what he was saying' said Jeff Hullibarger, Maison’s father, according to the Free Press.

'He was up there condemning our son. He wondered if he had repented enough to make it to heaven. He said suicide upwards of six times'.

'There were actually a couple of younger boys who were Maison's age who left the church sobbing,' Hullibarger said.

Maison’s parents said they spoke with LaCuesta before the funeral about what they wanted to be said during the ceremony at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Temperance. He jotted down notes during the conversation, according to the Free Press.

During the funeral, Maison’s father tried to put a stop to the talk of suicide by approaching the priest and whispering to him, but he said the priest ignored him, WTVG reports.

The family has called for LaCuesta to be removed altogether.

'It’s not OK,' Jeff Hullibarger added. 'He needs to be held accountable'.

After the service, the family told the priest not to come to the cemetery, WTVG reports.

Linda Hullibarger, Maison’s mother, said: 'He basically called our son a sinner.

She said: 'It was what he wanted. He said nothing about what we asked him to say'.

In a statement, the Archdiocese of Detroit said that LaCuesta won’t be allowed to give sermons at funerals indefinitely.

'We understand that an unbearable situation was made even more difficult, and we are sorry', the archdiocese said, according to the Free Press.

'For the foreseeable future, he will not be preaching at funerals and he will have his other homilies reviewed by a priest mentor.
