IIII versus IV on Clocks. Expressed as Roman numerals, the first twelve numbers are usually given as I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X, XI, XII. However, on many clock faces, when the numbers on the dial are in Roman numerals, IIII replaces IV.
The proper Roman numeral for 4 is IV though you may see IIII on fancy clocks because the position of the 4 is nearly upside down and reading a IV upside down would be difficult. ... IIII is used on clocks, for reasons of symmetry, because it is opposite VIII.
