The report, titled, Electromagnetic Defense Task Force, and the product of a mostly classified summit of officials from 40 agencies just outside of Washington earlier this year, is a forceful call for a new focus on preparing for either an enemy EMP attack or a natural hit such as a solar storm.
While it is focused on the devastating impact an EMP hit would have on the military, it appears to support a congressional warning that up to 90 percent of the population on the East Coast would die in a year of an attack that would dismantle or interfere with electricity, transportation, food processing, and healthcare.
Consider just some of the warnings in the report from the United States Air Force Air University and the Curtis E. LeMay Center for Doctrine Development and Education.
Figuring out just which country launched an attack would be difficult since certain weapons could be delivered in a satellite.
It also noted the development of the 5G mobile network and how it will run communications and why it must be protected, especially since China is the biggest investor in its development.
Because control of 5G is roughly equivalent to control of the Internet, open 5G is critical to freedom and free-market economics. Meanwhile, access to the 5G-millimeter wave bandwidth will be critical to operations in all war-fighting domains, in particular, space command & control, said the white paper.
Lt. Gen. Steven Kwast, the commander of Air Education and Training Command, said, As electromagnetic technologies fuse in new and often dangerous ways, its critical that the military and industry make honest evaluations of present and future conflict states to ensure were proactive rather than reactive.

I definitely agree with you. But at least with a solar storm we would have some warning.
” Civilians in blast areas and near the few upwind ground bursts...well, won’t do so well.”
Actually the nuke blast for EMP occurs about 100 miles above the surface so no blast damage and I don’t think there is any fallout.
MAybe that’s what the Sun is building up to since we are in this Solar minimum phase, the Sun will reemerge with a bang!
Outta some LEMONS??!!
Well okay Mister Wise Guy let me see you scale it up and start my car with it then... :)
Good lord this is hopeless with some here.
Doesn’t everyone here have a basic understanding of electrical power generation and distribution?
WTF, it’s not a “turbine” problem.
When an Nuclear EMP or Solar CME EMF pulse occurs, the subsequent electron wave is absorbed by MILES of power distribution lines and overloads any components attached to those electrical lines.
One of the most vulnerable critical infrastructure components are the relatively few high value large EHV transformers used for our high voltage power grid high tension power lines.
An EMP overload can burn out the windings of a transformer and make it completely inoperable.
Large EHV Transformers are made to order and can take two years just to manufacture one.
Many are manufacturered aboard, China, Portugal and Brazil, for instance where iron, and manufacturing expertise is realitively inexpensive.
Utility companies do not stock sufficient quantities of spares due to expense and custom configuration of EHV transformers.
That’s the crux issue.

Sorry I was thinking transformer but wrote turbine.
I believe EMP is a more credible threat than the nuclear exchange weve all feared since the 50s.
I believe its a bunch of hooey.
Sorry, some military support functions are not on military grid...You are mistakenl
And tho you are sure, here are two articles, One on Real Clear Defense website, one in Forbes refuting your “I am sure” comment...
https://www.realcleardefense.com/articles/2018/04/12/future_warfare_protecting_the_grid_113317.html
I could find more, but I have things to do and you have provided only your opinion as fact.
From what I have read, I strongly disagree with your premise and I strongly believe that hardening entire power grid is a National Defense issue, and we are fools for ignoring our vulnerabilities and do so at our peril.
Tridents are why I sleep at night. Every government in the World knows they are out there.
“the subsequent electron wave is absorbed by MILES of power distribution lines “
Your ignorance of the electrical distribution system allows you to think there are miles of lines without any protections.
“For an attacker, anything less than the entire grid being down for months is pretty bad, because of counterstrikes. “
Nuclear systems do not rely on the public power grid, so that statement makes no sense.
It makes perfect sense.
If it were insured destruction of the U.S., they have much more incentive.
So, we not only have Tridents, and satellite detection with hardened bunkers (even the President's), we would know where a dirty bomb or suitcase nuke fuel came from pretty quickly. That's also no big secret to anyone thinking nuclear attack.
Just read while researching nuke detection that the Port of Los Angeles installed in 2017 a new radiation detecting conveyor system that ALL containers pass through. Sure there are more planned in other major ports.
I'm sorry to read so much here that implies our military nuke experts are so dimwitted.
While I have zero knowledge of our electrical distribution system, I can't believe that our grid doesn't have some major circuit breakers in place. However, the North East region went dark a couple/few? years back. So, I might be wrong.
The transformers are a different ballgame.
It’s kind of funny, really. Ivan continues to push that narrative about our military forces being retarded and having junk equipment in futile efforts to get some real information out of Americans in Internet discussions. Maybe he’ll delude himself into getting an *ss kicking sooner, and a handful of moronic U.S. lefties who support him here will get the world war that they’re most afraid of very soon.
“I’m sorry to read so much here that implies our military nuke experts are so dimwitted. “
The fact that there hasn’t been a nuclear attack on our soil goes to show they are pretty smart.
“The transformers are a different ballgame. “
As you pointed out that the nuke guys (I’m one of them) are pretty smart, so are our infrastructure guys.
And so do I believe that an undetectable EMP (source unknown)is a likely scenario,
rather than 'mutually agreed destruction' scenario.
That is why we need to be prepared spiritually, physically, and emotionally.
"If ye are prepared,.. ye shall not fear. "
