Pieces of a renowned Roman mosaic that were looted and eventually sold to an American university are to be returned to Turkey, thetimes.co.uk reports.
The twelve fragments once formed parts of the border of the "gypsy girl" mosaic in the ancient Roman settlement of Zeugma, close to the modern Turkish city of Gaziantep, and show human faces and birds.
The near-complete main part of the mosaic, which has remained in Turkey, depicts a girl with windswept hair and an intense stare. It is on display in Gaziantep's Zeugma mosaics museum and has become an unofficial symbol of the city. The mosaic goes back to AD200-300.

Not cool how they always use the term “looted”. Most of this stuff was not even close to looted. And think of all the treasures lost in Egypt, Iraq, and Syria.
When things are looted, it prevents islam from destroying world heritage items that predate them by centuries.

Cue the song “Gypsy Woman” by Brian Hyland, 1970;
“From nowhere through a caravan
Around the campfire light
A lovely woman in motion
With hair as dark as night!”

Doesn’t it belong to Rome, not Turkey?

Same with the Chinese. If the West hadn't purchased all those old artefacts from the Chinese, they would have destroyed most of them during the Cultural Revolution and the Great Leap Backward.
Now they are pissed off they have to buy it back.

What are the Turkish Muzzies going to do with it given that their religion strongly forbids artistic representations of the human form?

Turkey was Rome. As I recall, Eastern Roman state existed until about 1492 or there abouts.

Modern Turkey is the inheritor of the Islamic/Ottoman legacy, not the heir of Rome.
The US is the closest thing to a modern heir of Rome and we should keep these antiquities to protect them from destruction at the hands of third-world barbarians.

That’s quite an image the artist created.

A recent dig (not at Zeugma, obviously) found a nice fragment of a statue of Aphrodite, small enough to be held in the hand. And in Pompeii, another version of Leda and the Swan was found this year.
