Shes a smart one! And I love her name. So cute.
That was cute. And what kid wants to buy lettuce anyway :-) my son is 27 and still would say the same thing as your granddaughter.
It is profound. raping the land for todays needs w/o consideration of the future
I spent much time in Haiti. Port au Prince and the mountains near the DR border. In the mountains absolutely NO utilities. A fireplace was in our cabin but no wood. In the city of Port au Prince we had power for maybe 45 minutes a night. There was a commode in our rooms but no water so we had buckets of water. No baths or showers.. just sponging off with a cloth and a cup of water. When I returned home after first trip I was exhausted and hopped in tub. I fell asleep and was sinking in water.. probably saved by kitty Cali (my screen name DollyCali) who woke me by getting on my head and hitting me and meowing.
I was part of an educational mission group that made several trips to this region. We were Christian Educators who brought seminary to the men and women for college credit towards their ministerial degree. We would spend several months with intense classes and went between the heat and humidity of Port au Prince and the chilling mountains of the border. I was always cold there the first trip not knowing the temp differential
The people we encountered were gentle and loving. Kind and eager to learn. I recall my first trip. In the mountains it was Palm Sunday. We joined the group in worship in a primitive shelter made of PALM FRONDS. Imagine that.
I on those trips had long hair. Blond. Tried to follow the recommendations of modest dress. The people all.... especially the children would touch my hair and look into my eyes for a smile which was of course given. Hugs from a weird blond tall lady was unique for them
Each trip Took Three huge bags full of toys. On the carry on a fellow passenger helped me with a huge military duffle bag full of toys. One of the bags I used was my dads from WW2. I told him a single gal traveling needs to take her make up. He looked perplexed. I winked
The kids had no toys. NONE. Their dolls were sticks tied together. For cars they had bigger sticks. I brought stuffies, barbies, matchbooks, star war figures , crayones/coloring books. etc. The kids would be in tears when we gave them the stuff. I had so many toys I had no room for my clothes... so I layered 12 outfits each trip. To say I was hot and uncomfortable and looked like Ms. Fatty USA was an understatement. I left all clothes except my one outfit to return with the locals.
Wonderful memories.. tainted by a major hurricane that swept the mountain villages we serviced our last trip. i fear most of the people were killed. Washed down the mountains. I still hurt inside thinking of those dear loving people who had so little and were so eager for God’s word/teaching
They burned all their trees to make charcoal.
The land of voodoo since presenting itself to Satan in 1804.
The evil and death there is unimaginable.
another aside. My first trip there the team included my brother an AF SMSGT who helped with logistics.
There was officially NO military presence/base in Haiti
low and behold we found one.. small walled and a small PX with AC that we loved and hated to leave.
Not sure what the official status is now. Politics was as is complicated. Need to know then and now prevails
Through Compassion International, we personally sponsored for many years, two girls from Haiti, in Port-au-Prince.
Exit.. the religious /spiritual is very complex. To say that voodoo is non existent is a joke. It is real and powerful. Satan at his A game. For those w/o Christ.. well, that is their thing.
Many of the converts were Christian but they did not relax or let loose of their voodoo background so there was a bastardization of both.
You had a sick kid? The priest would come in and pray.. no change. Called in the Voodoo guy and his “magic” would heal. Satan is very powerful and when you spend time in regions that are not really Christian you observe and understand the struggle the people have with missionary folk
The students we had were true converts. The totally rejected voodoo/satan. We immersed and confessed believers in Christ. They knew this would not end their troubles.. but they also knew their soul belonged to Jesus
You could come and visit us for Chicken Fried Steak!
Hubby introduced me to that ,the first time I went to Nebraska to visit his folks.
I didn’t like it much at first, but now I LOVE it!
Mr. B will do the honers, he’s a GREAT cook!
Thank you! I’d love to take you up on your offer.
