I was flying a kite and it got caught on a nanny, says one of the little Banks children, offering as good an explanation as any for the arrival of the ultimate child-minder in this new trailer for Disneys Mary Poppins Returns.
Directed by Rob Marshall and starring Emily Blunt in the title role, the musical, floating down just before this Christmas, is a sequel to 1964s Julie Andrews classic, and judging by this trailer seems spot-on in terms of tone and style. Theres even a big, splashy and colorful animation-live action hybrid scene, complete with penguins.

It’s a beautiful place and if you like lobster and other shellfish, even better. :)
"I'm Mary Poppins, y'all!"
The son of Van Dyke’s bank chairman (the next morning when they were flying kites) told Mr. Banks his father died laughing after he pondered the joke Banks’ told him about a man with a wooden leg named Smith (when Banks was fired after being summoned at night to the board). Since it bumped the son up to chairman, he was able to rehire Banks, and with a promotion (although baffling why he’d hire the man who “killed” his father - but it was a fantasy, after all).
Of course, as was pointed out, P.L. Travers hated the original film, felt Uncle Walt screwed her over, and so much so that she refused to allow any very lucrative sequels at the time. I’m amazed they were able to make this one, as she was adamant about no sequel films (she lived to 1996 just to make sure they wouldn’t).
Won’t go see anything this lot produces, but I want that carpetbag!
Very nice! I am going to propose a trip to my wife. We are landlocked landlubbers and seafood is a luxury for us.
Thanks!
Hey another good series from the 70s and 80s is “All Creatures Great and Small.”
Emily has the definition of “bedroom eyes”.
When advertising for replacement actors for the NYC show, he specified minorities only. He can have his attitude.....I dont have to ever pay money to see him!
Life's too short to worry about whether a movie has someone with whom I disagree on every issue starring in it.
Fair enough. Im just saying that I dont have to put my money forth for anything he does. My personal choice.......
Really? How dare they? What character did they make into a lesbian? Or did they write a new character?
Dick Van Dyke is playing the old banker character he played in the original which is neat even though his character supposedly died in the movie.
I think he is playing the son of the character he played in the original - Mr Dawes Junior. As you say, Mr Dawes Senior died, and even if he hadn’t, he would certainly would be dead by the time this film is set. Jane and Michael are both all grown up now.
Oh that makes sense. Thanks.
Will the middle son be Queer?
Is the maid a transvestite deviant?
Does the youngest constantly use the “F” word?
We’ve certainly come a long way from dear old David Tomlinson singing:
It’s grand to be an Englishman in 1910
King Edward’s on the throne, it’s the age of MEN.
Although, from the trailer, everything seems to be perfectly acceptable so far. The Banks children are the Banks children; Mary Poppins still seems prim and proper; London looks foggy and romantic.
My one fear is that because it is set during the age of the Great Depression, that might give them an excuse to harp on about the ‘evils of capitalism.’
I could be wrong. I really hope I am. We could do with a good, old fashioned, little bit of cinematic magic and escapism.
