Nike taps Kaepernick as face of new ‘Just Do It’ ad

Nike unveiled a new ad on Monday for the 30th anniversary of its "Just Do It" campaign featuring Colin Kaepernick, who has remained unsigned by an NFL team for nearly two years.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback tweeted an image from the new campaign featuring a close-up photo of his face, accompanied by the words "Believe in something, even if it means sacrificing everything."

Kaepernick became the first player to take a knee during the national anthem during the 2016 NFL season as part of an effort to protest social injustice. He became a free agent at the end of the season, and has remained unsigned.

The player has since filed a grievance alleging that league owners colluded to keep him off a team. An arbitrator ruled last week that Kaepernick's case will go to trial. ESPN reported that Nike signed Kaepernick to an endorsement deal in 2011, and has maintained that contract since then.

"We believe Colin is one of the most inspirational athletes of this generation, who has leveraged the power of sport to help move the world forward," Gino Fisanotti, Nike's vice president of brand for North America, told ESPN.

In the roughly two years since Kapernick first started kneeling, numerous other players have taken a knee, raised a fist or have stayed off the field during the playing of the national anthem in protest of social injustice.

President Trump has lashed out at protesting players, declaring they should be fired and suggesting they don't belong in the country.

I hate their shoes I think they’re stiff and narrow and flat and overpriced . For running New Balance. For style like Adidas.

I've run in Air Pegasus since before they were AIR Pegasus. I think they call them Zoom Pegasus now. I'll finish off my current pair. Two weeks old and no one sees me running in the desert anyways.

But my next pair will be New Balance. I like them almost as much and it isn't as if I run as far as I did 40 years ago. I've told Nike.

Go to any high end orthopedic office and look at whom is wearing what. High 90’s, Staff is wearing New Balance. Only ones that make a 9 1/2-4E shoe that fits.. 16 years of foot pain. They took fascia out of both feet within 8 months. 500 dollar inserts.... yada yada...New Balance 619’s....cheap and solid.

When I was running track in college, Puma and Adidas pretty much had a lock on spikes. The school supplied you with a single pair of spikes and one pair of flats.

I think around 1970, the school must have gotten a good deal from a Japanese maker named Onitsuka. All our flats after that were Tigers. I think they later started using Asics as the name but kept “Tigers”. They were good quality.

The biggest difference from then to now are you can now get inexpensive off brands which are perfectly good. Back then “falsies” as we called them were just awful.

They must believe that this will help them sell over-priced sneakers to their target market.

Good luck with that.

Believe in the country? Believe in standing and respecting the country during the national anthem?

I believe that the Players and by extension the NFL, intentionally insult my nation and my service. Just do it? Sure, I will turn of the NFL and now Nike. I will continue to do this until the NFL, the players and their sponsors learn their lesson.

Never owned a pair of Nikes. Never will.

Actually, I haven't even worn a pair of sneakers since I was about 28 years old. There's just something "off" about an older, mature person in a pair of sneakers.
