Idris Elba is one of many stars to be linked to the role of James Bond, as speculation continues over who will take over from Daniel Craig when he leaves the franchise.

And the actor, 45, appears to be back in the running for the coveted 007 role after Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said 'it is time' for a non-white leading man to play the character.

Speaking with American filmmaker Antoine Fuqua on Thursday about who could next take on the role she said it 'will happen eventually' and Idris is a clear favourite.

I think the new bond should be Indian (dot in the forehead, not feather in the headband). He could even talk with the fun accent.

If Bond is not a typical white British guy, what’s the point of watching it? I’d keep focusing on the PC roots of choosing a black character, ruining the movie for me.

...but if this is an agenda driven decision...

Exactly. That right there is the problem. The most important word in the English language is the word “why”. “Why they are doing this”, rather than what they are doing is the problem. I’d be thinking about it during the whole movie, making it pointless to watch.

The Bond attraction is no longer what it was in the 60’s. I think its worn out, and when they make changes to fit a current agenda, it looses it’s appeal. I’ll wait for it to be on HBO, or maybe just forgetaboutit. Once Connery left, it wasn’t Bond anymore. Now it might as well be a Marvel character. I’ll watch “Berlin Correspondent” again, rather than a new Bond movie.

I like Timothy Dalton for the same reason I like Roger Moore, though not as much as Moore. IMHO, a spy shouldn’t be tall, handsome, cocky, and getting all the attention the moment he steps into a room like other actors portrayed Bond. Roger Moore would get cocky with his adversary usually after it was apparent that Bond was a spy and there was no longer a need for subterfuge. I do wish Dalton was able to pull off the cocky arrogance like others did. But it was easy to watch Dalton’s version of Bond just kind of go with the atmosphere of the room and hide in plain sight — like a spy — than it was easier to watch Brosnan or Connery (I know, the blasphemy :) ) draw all the attention to them all the time. IMHO, Daniel Craig is able to do both the hide in plain sight and the cocky arrogance when appropriate thing as well as Moore.

“...but if this is an agenda driven decision, the producers can go pound sand.”

Bond producer Barbara Broccoli said ‘it is time’ for a non-white leading man to play the character. It seems this is only about race. There are no other conditions stated, only that “it is time” for a “non white”. They can all pound sand.

I’d like to see how Idris Elba plays Bond. I remember when Craig was cast as Bond, and I didn’t care for him at first, but now, he’s actually my favorite. I liked the way he played the character.

I agree. He is based on a best-selling series of novels about a white guy who is an agent of MI6. Most of Bond's quirks, likes and dislikes were based on Ian Fleming's. Idris Elba (or any other black actor, or a woman actor) should play a different character.

We'd never hear the end of it if a black literary character was changed to a white male. If Barbara Broccoli says "it's time" for a black Bond, that just means Bond has outlived his usefulness.

Matthew Lewis... hard to believe he was Neville in the Harry Potter movies.

Craig is good, but I didn't really like the "tone" of the newer bond films. Too gritty and dark, overwrought.

The Bond of the novels is gritty and dark. Overwrought? Not so much.

I've read the novels several times each. Craig's dark and gritty tone matches the novels.

Funny enough, when I read the action scenes or the cold-blooded killing scenes in the books, Craig's Bond is who I see. But I see Connery's Bond when he's interacting with women. Connery was just more in line with that part of Bond. Probably because Connery's Bond was from that era, and Craig's Bond has to put up with 40 years of PC nonsense.

How about Elba playing Bond’s CIA buddy in a spinoff movie?

in which case the tall skinny guy who played Loki in the super hero movies would be better.

Tom Hiddleston. He was good as the mercenary in 2017's "Kong: Skull Island". I could see him pulling off Bond, or some other secret agent role.

He was great in The Wire. I never watch James Bond movies so I don’t care about who plays 007.

I loved Remington Steele. Great series.

It had Stephanie Zimbalist after all.
