How many more times can it be said that Better Call Saul is one of the best shows on television? As many more times as theyre willing to make new episodes.
Its been 10 years since Breaking Bad premiered (an anniversary still being celebrated), but four since the Vince Gilligan- and Peter Gould-created prequel premiered.
And in that time, the (mostly) same creative team that changed television with the original series has only continued to up their game year after year. Watching the ways in which the Better Call Saul team challenges themselves to push beyond the expected, beyond the easy, beyond the mundane (especially when depicting the most mundane of events) has been one of the most fascinating experiences possible for a TV fan.
This review will be spoiler-free except for the well-established news that the house fire at the end of Season 3 was, in fact, fatal for Chuck (Michael McKean), and as you might expect, this fact hovers over these early episodes. Its just one facet of the story, though: Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) might be grieving, but hes also a wounded animal in search of work following the loss of his law license in Season 3 and the impact of Kims (Rhea Seehorn) accident (leaving her nursing a broken arm and other damages).
Plus, dealing drugs in Albuquerque has become very complicated following Don Hectors (Mark Margolis) stroke, especially given the fact that Nacho (Michael Mando) swapped Don Hectors medications so that he could try to keep his father out of the business and maybe even free himself. But Nacho might be screwed on that front, given how Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) is lurking in the shadows and Mike (Jonathan Banks) is still sorting out how he fits (or not) into the local criminal underworld.

The first season was pretty good. The 2nd season was really Blahh to me. The third season was good.
But this show does not come even close to the thrill of Breaking Bad.
He went to eleven. In bcs, he went to heaven.
Brits say the word series for season (as in tv show seasons). I thought you outed yourself!
yes, Howard was every bit as greasy as Chuck, but his priority was to his law firm; Chuck’s was to his vendetta against his brother which endangered the firm.
“Howard is almost as greasy,”
Howard’s demeanor was very off-putting, but as the series progressed he seemed to be an OK person. He had some sense of honor. I felt bad for him when Jimmy forced Howard to fire him. (It was a hilarious episode, though.)
I think Howard wanted Chuck gone; he was a growing embarassment. But it was noble of him to pay a big chunk of Chuck’s severance out of his own pocket.
It’s the way he’s treated Kim that keeps me from liking him too much. I don’t trust him.
The original plan was to do the show as a comedy. Instead they made it into a character drama. Much better for that decision.
Loved breaking Bad and love Better call Saul. Well done well written, as I expected.
I agree, much better. Looking forward to the new ones now I see it’s been released.
That's just nutty.
The episode alone, where Jimmy took down Chuck in the hearing, was one of the best episodes of TV I have ever seen.
I see I’m not the only one. :-)
Better Call Saul had its rewarding moments, but it took a lot of time to set things up. It built more slowly and deliberately to climax with fewer subplots.
Also, the Jimmy-Kim interplay may remind people of the Walter-Skyler dynamic, which for some people was the worst thing about the earlier series - too much like real-life relationships.
Good point. I was expecting Howard to be a big villain, but he eventually comes across as one of the few honorable people in the show! Great performance as a high price oily lawyer.
Freegards
