A huge amount of "UFO" videos were posted to YouTube this weekend regarding an object seen in the morning twilight skies over Florida on Friday morning. Popular UFO channels like Third Phase of the Moon reported it as a UFO incident. The real cause? A SpaceX launch of a Falcon 9 rocket carrying a Dragon capsule to orbit to deliver cargo and supplies to the International Space Station for CRS-15.
Despite some who think that "SpaceX is FakeX" and that all of spaceflight is a hoax (including a number of Freepers), the real hoax is the belief that this was a UFO and that the SpaceX launch was invented after the fact as an excuse. Third Phase himself tries to make this argument, claiming the launch was not announced ahead of time. Of course it was, which is why I drove out there that morning with my equipment to track the launch from the moment it came off the pad to the moment the second stage shut down occurred.

I knew this launch would cause a ruckus because of its timing; as the vehicle ascended past about 100 km altitude, it reached line of sight to the sun (thanks to the fact that earth is round, again in contradiction to certain freeper beliefs) illuminating the rocket and its exhaust against the dark background of the twilight sky. This is what caused the brilliant display and why the rocket suddenly increased in brightness dramatically towards the end of the first stage burn.
This forum is supposed to allow the discussion of thoughts and ideas.
This guy wants to run a one-man gestapo complete with book burning. He can’t stand opposing views.
His loss...
Now go away or I shall taunt you a second time!
Oh right, everyone who professes to sincerely believe in flat earth on Free Republic is “just mocking me.” Even I’m not self centered enough to believe that.
Try saying that about libs who get banned, or racists. Doesn’t work, does it? This forum has the right to defend its borders and its cultural identity. Too bad it doesn’t defend itself from ignorant flat earth morons.
Fine, I warned you. Your stalking post has been reported.
Dude. The peoples have been f## xking with you.
“Dude,” no, they’re not. These people sincerely believe this crap, they post it around free republic whether I’m on the thread or not, and they generally aren’t happy about my presence when I respond.
You have no power to ban anybody.
What you are proving with this idiotic post and rant of yours is that you, without a shadow of a doubt cannot stand other peoples differing opinions. Then you name call - like a low IQ response from the low end of the bell curve and you have to audacity to call others “idiots” who don’t believe you crap.
Enjoy your book-burning club Napoleon Dynamite!
Thanks messierhunter. Ping to APoD list. I'd never live-streamed a SpaceX launch until the FH test flight, which is going to prove to be hard to top, and since then the ad hoc vids of launches have not held as much interest. It's not very different from the reaction of the American public to the Apollo program after Apollo 11 I suppose, SpaceX is making it look routine.
I watched a video from one of the hard core flat-earthers, it was amusing and bemusing. He used a then-recent SpaceX launch video to "prove" that the Earth is flat and that space travel is a hoax. His proof consisted of yelling "it's fake! It's so fake! Look how fake!" over various snippets showing things like, oh, the curvature of the Earth, the fist stage and the fairings falling away, that kind of thing.
Nice list, and all pretty recent.
Well said, and/or well joked.
A High School buddy and I pretended to be flat earthers as a shtick back in the day. We thought it was a hoot. We had no idea there were still people who really do believe it, though.
From Wiki:
Simons was recalled to active duty in 1951 to serve as an infantry instructor and Ranger trainer in the Amphibious and Jungle Training camp at Eglin AFB, Florida. Other assignments included a year as a Public Information Officer (PIO, now “Public Affairs Officer” or PAO) at Ft. Bragg, North Carolina, a job that he despised (he held a low opinion of the media, one that would prove itself in later years and assignments. “The press hasn’t done very well for the American soldier,” he would later remark.)
What a great man!
You are too polite, I would just point to the Bell curve.
Ditto, truly curious.
:^D
I don’t have the power to ban anyone, no, but the mods do and they did remove your stalking post. Claiming the earth is flat is making a claim of fact, not opinion. It’s your opinion that I cannot stand people with differing opinions; learn the difference between opinion and fact. It’s a fact that I warned you and then a mod removed your stalking post after you failed to heed my warning. If you think I have a low IQ, well again, that’s your opinion and I’m happy you have that opinion. It makes you an easier target if you under-estimate me.
The FH test flight was a lightning rod, energizing both space lovers and space deniers. I had my own footage of the launch through landing used by at least two conspiracy theorists on YouTube who claim the whole thing was a fake. One of them even claims my footage shows “inconsistencies” with other amateur footage because they don’t understand why the clouds would look different from different angles, or why the sonic booms would arrive at different times from different distances. I think the quality and the quantity of footage that came from that launch upset them so much that it’s made some of them come completely unhinged as they struggle to rationalize it away in order to minimize their cognitive dissonance.
Hopefully you received the list from rlmorel, I believe he forwarded you my response.
